Why every training minute now has to make people think
Ask 'any questions?' to a room of thirty and you will usually get silence, then a dash to the tea break. Most trainers were never taught to question, so they copy their own teachers, and learners simply echo back the answer the trainer clearly wanted.
With less time in the training calendar, each session must do more. Questioning techniques for trainers help facilitators turn content into thinking, check understanding without a test and pull quieter learners into the conversation, in the room or on a video call.
Average formal learning hours per employee fell to 13.7 in 2024, from 17.4 in 2023.
What participants will be able to do
Diagnose flat questions
Recognise why closed, vague and answer-in-the-question questions produce silence or guesses.
Use the right question type
Choose open, probing and checking questions on purpose for each moment of a session.
Sequence for depth
Plan a question ladder that moves learners from recall to understanding to application.
Hold the silence
Use wait time, think-pair-share and named turns so more learners answer, not just the fastest.
Redirect wrong answers kindly
Respond to a wrong or partial answer in a way that corrects the idea and protects the learner's dignity.
Debrief with purpose
Run a structured debrief that moves from what happened to what it means and what learners will do next.

Sample training plan: half-day hands-on design
This half-day module is built around the moment a trainer asks a question and nothing happens. Participants audit their own questions, rewrite them as open, probing and checking questions, build a question ladder from recall to application and practise holding silence for five full seconds. They redirect wrong answers without embarrassment, run chat and poll questions for a virtual room and close with a micro-teach and a four-step debrief. Each trainer leaves with re-questioned session content and a 30-day practice log.
Participants can plan, ask and follow up questions that make learners think, in the room and online.

Recommended: half a day in person (09:30–13:30), or 2 × 2-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 30-day questioning practice log and one peer observation. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is questioning techniques for trainers?
The recommended design is half a day in person, about four hours, or two live virtual sessions of two hours, followed by a 30-day questioning practice log, a peer observation and reviews at 30, 60 and 90 days.
What activities are included in questioning techniques for trainers?
Trainers experience a dead and a live question, re-question their own session, build a question ladder, practise wait time and redirecting wrong answers with role cards, run chat and poll questions online and finish with a micro-teach and a four-step debrief.
How we deliver it
Micro-teaching
Each participant runs a short segment of their own content and receives feedback on question choice, wait time and responses.
Your content, re-questioned
Participants rewrite the questions for a session they actually deliver, so the work goes straight into their next program.
Room and screen practice
Drills cover in-person rooms and live virtual sessions with chat, polls and breakout rooms.
Peer observation
Partners track question types and wait time on a simple observation sheet that trainers keep using afterwards.
Tailored versions
Add-on to trainer certification
Runs as an elective module alongside Bodhih's train-the-trainer and facilitation programs.
For SMEs who teach
Focus on technical content, product walk-throughs and checking understanding of procedures step by step.
For virtual trainers
Extra practice with chat, polls, breakout prompts and engaging groups with cameras off.
How we measure impact
Measurement follows the ADDIE model's Evaluate stage. Before the module, trainers take AssessAll pre-assessments: Lesson Design and Questioning Technique Assessment for Teachers and Trainers, and Training Facilitation and Group Handling Assessment for Trainers and Facilitators. Both are repeated as post-assessments at day 90. A 30-60-90 day follow-up reviews each trainer's questioning practice log, a peer observation of one live session and learner participation in their programs.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What are questioning techniques for trainers?
They are deliberate ways of using questions to drive learning in a training session: choosing open, probing or checking questions, sequencing them from recall to application, using wait time, responding to wrong answers and debriefing activities. Good questioning shifts the thinking from the trainer to the learners, which helps them remember and apply what they learn.
What types of questions should a trainer ask?
Use open questions to start thinking, probing questions to go deeper and checking questions to confirm understanding. Add application questions such as 'how would you use this on Monday?' and reflective debrief questions after activities. Avoid closed questions with obvious answers and a closing 'any questions?', which rarely produce useful responses.
How long should a trainer wait after asking a question?
Wait at least three to five seconds before rephrasing or answering yourself. Longer waits usually bring more and better answers, including from quieter learners. Tell the group you are giving thinking time, or use think-pair-share so everyone forms an answer first. Participants practise holding silence in the micro-teaching rounds.
How do you handle a wrong answer in training?
Thank the learner, find the part that is right and build from it, then invite others to add or refine. Ask a follow-up that helps them reason it through rather than simply correcting them. Keep the tone curious, never embarrassing, so learners keep answering. The module includes a drill on redirecting wrong answers.
How do you ask questions in virtual training?
Name the person or use structured tools: chat waterfalls where everyone types and then posts at once, polls, reactions and breakout prompts with a clear output. Give more wait time than in a room and say so. Avoid open 'anyone?' questions to a silent screen. The virtual segment practises each method live.
How is this different from questioning skills training?
Questioning skills training helps all employees ask better questions in meetings, sales and problem-solving. This module is for people who teach. It focuses on questions that build learning: sequencing, wait time, checking understanding, redirecting wrong answers and debriefing activities in classroom and virtual training, with a 30-day practice log afterwards.
How long is the questioning techniques module?
The recommended design is half a day in person, about four hours, or two live virtual sessions of two hours each. It is followed by a 30-day questioning practice log and a peer observation of one live session. It can run on its own for an L&D team or as part of a longer trainer development program.
Is this module part of Bodhih's train the trainer pathway?
Yes. It works as a stand-alone half-day module or as an elective within Bodhih's trainer programs. Bodhih's Train the Trainer program is ranked among the global top 7 in the Train the Trainer market by London-based research firm Technavio. The module runs in Bengaluru, across India, in the Gulf and live virtually.
