Coaching, mentoring and training: what is the difference?
- Coaching helps a person examine their own thinking and behaviour through questions, feedback and practice. The coach does not need to have done the person's job.
- Mentoring passes on experience. A mentor, usually more senior in the same field, shares advice, perspective and networks.
- Training builds a defined skill in a group, through a set curriculum and practice.
Most organisations use all three. A common pattern is a group leadership program, followed by one-to-one coaching so each leader turns the program into personal action, and a mentoring scheme that connects emerging leaders with senior ones.
How to choose the right coaching option
- One leader with specific goals, at a transition point? Choose executive coaching.
- Managers who tell rather than develop their people? Choose coaching for managers or coaching skills training.
- Want coaching available to many people without hiring external coaches? Build internal coaches with coach the coach.
- Want a structured mentoring or coaching culture across the organisation? Start with a coaching and mentoring program design.

How Bodhih measures coaching
Coaching should change behaviour that colleagues can see. For executive coaching, a baseline 360° on AssessAll, Bodhih's AI assessment platform, is repeated as a focused pulse on the chosen behaviours at the end of the engagement, and the sponsor reviews progress at the mid-point and close. For coaching-skills programs, participants complete a pre and post assessment and log real coaching conversations in the weeks after the workshop.
Behavioural assessments such as Harrison Assessments and psychometric assessments can be added to give coaches and leaders a sharper starting point.
Frequently asked questions
What coaching services does Bodhih offer?
Bodhih offers one-to-one executive coaching for senior and high-potential leaders, and programs that build coaching capability: coaching skills for managers, coaching and mentoring skills, and coach-the-coach development for internal coaches. We also help HR teams design organisation-wide coaching and mentoring programs. All options can run in person or live virtual.
What is the difference between executive coaching and coaching skills training?
Executive coaching is a one-to-one service: a Bodhih coach works with one leader over several months on that leader's goals. Coaching skills training is a group program that teaches managers to coach their own teams. The first develops a leader directly; the second builds a skill that spreads through the organisation.
How long does a coaching program take?
Executive coaching engagements are recommended to run for six months, with a session every two to three weeks. Coaching skills workshops for managers usually run for one or two days, with practice and follow-up over the next few weeks. Coach-the-coach development is blended and runs over several weeks so that coaches can practise with real coachees.
Can Bodhih train our managers to coach their teams?
Yes. Our coaching for managers and coaching skills programs teach managers a simple coaching conversation, listening and questioning skills, and how to give feedback that develops people. Practice uses real team situations, and managers log coaching conversations after the workshop so the habit sticks.
Is coaching available online?
Yes. Executive coaching sessions and coaching skills programs can both run live virtual, in person at your location, or in a blended mix. Master trainers and coaches travel from Bengaluru for in-person work across India and internationally.
