Why good ideas stay silent in so many teams
Respect for hierarchy, the fear of looking foolish and the speed of video calls often combine into silence. The new joiner who noticed the flaw in the rollout plan says nothing, and the team finds out in production.
Silence is expensive but rarely visible. Speaking up at work training gives people simple words, good timing and plenty of practice, and it teaches managers and peers to respond in ways that make the next person more likely to speak.
Only 20% of employees worldwide were engaged at work in 2025, the lowest level since 2020.
What participants will be able to do
Share ideas with confidence
Pitch an idea in a meeting in under 60 seconds, covering the problem, the suggestion and one next step.
Raise concerns early
Flag a risk to a plan, quality or deadline while it is still cheap to fix, using a calm three-part structure.
Disagree upward with respect
Offer a different view to a senior or a customer in a way that shows respect and keeps the conversation open.
Ask the question in the room
Ask the clarifying question others are thinking, without apologising for it or derailing the meeting.
Be heard in hybrid rooms
Win airtime on video calls and in chat, and adapt for colleagues from cultures that read directness differently.
Respond well when others speak
Thank, explore and close the loop when a colleague raises an idea or concern, so speaking up gets rewarded.

Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design
This one-day design is built around the moments people stay silent and regret it. Participants map where their voice freezes, pitch an idea in sixty seconds, tell a project manager the go-live date is at risk and disagree with a busy director played by a facilitator. They practise breaking into a hybrid call and, just as importantly, responding well when someone else speaks up. Each person leaves with phrases tested under pressure and a 60-day voice challenge.
Participants can share ideas, raise concerns, disagree upward and respond well when others speak up.

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 3 × 2.5-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 60-day voice challenge with manager check-ins. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is speaking up at work training?
The recommended design is one full day in person or three live virtual sessions of two and a half hours, followed by a 60-day voice challenge with partner check-ins at weeks three and six and manager check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days.
What activities are included in speaking up at work training?
Participants map where their voice freezes, pitch an idea in sixty seconds, raise a real concern with an impatient project manager, disagree with a senior director played by a facilitator, break into a hybrid call and practise responding well when others speak up.
How we deliver it
Real moments, rehearsed
Participants bring the meeting, email or conversation where they held back and rehearse it until the words feel natural.
Graded practice
Exercises move from low-risk ideas to harder disagreements with seniors, so confidence builds step by step.
Hybrid drills
Some practice runs on live video calls with mixed in-room and remote participants, mirroring real team meetings.
Both sides of the conversation
Everyone also practises receiving ideas and concerns, because how a team responds decides whether people speak again.
Tailored versions
For new joiners and graduates
Built into induction, with practice on asking questions, flagging confusion early and speaking in a first customer call.
For GCC and global teams
Focus on speaking up to onsite and overseas stakeholders on time-zone calls, including disagreeing with a lead on the business side.
Team session with the manager
A half-day follow-on where a team and its manager agree speaking-up habits together and test them in a live meeting.
How we measure impact
Measurement sits in the Evaluate stage of the ADDIE model. Participants take an AssessAll pre-assessment before the program, such as Speak-Up: Raising a Concern and Hearing One or the Assertive Communication Profile, and a post-assessment at day 90. Teams can add a short speaking-up pulse. Managers hold 30, 60 and 90 day check-ins on ideas shared, concerns raised early and how the team responded, and we review voice challenge logs with HR.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What is speaking up at work training?
Speaking up at work training helps employees share ideas, raise concerns, ask questions and disagree respectfully in everyday work, across meetings, one-to-ones, video calls and messages. Participants practise real situations from their own jobs. They also learn how to respond when colleagues speak up, so the habit spreads across the whole team.
How can I speak up more in meetings?
Prepare one point before the meeting and aim to say it in the first ten minutes, because the longer you wait the harder it gets. Keep it short: the problem, your suggestion and a next step. Building on someone else's point is an easy way in. If the moment passes, follow up in writing the same day.
How do you disagree with your boss respectfully?
Show first that you understand their view, then share yours as a perspective with reasons and evidence. Ask questions rather than making pronouncements, and pick the right setting, often a one-to-one. If the decision still goes the other way, commit to it openly. The program includes role-plays with a facilitator playing a busy senior.
Why do employees not speak up at work?
Common reasons include fear of looking foolish, respect for hierarchy, a belief that nothing will change and simply not knowing how to phrase it. In hybrid teams, people on screen also find it hard to break in. Good training addresses both sides: skills for the speaker and better responses from managers and peers.
How do I raise a concern about a deadline or plan?
Raise it early and keep it factual: what you noticed, why it matters and what you suggest. Bring evidence such as dates, dependencies or test results, and avoid blaming anyone. Offer options, not just problems. Our speaking up at work training uses a short structure and a role-play with a project manager who does not want to hear it.
Is this the same as assertiveness training?
They overlap but are not the same. Assertiveness training covers expressing needs and boundaries in general. This program focuses on voice in team work, meaning ideas, early warnings, questions and respectful disagreement in meetings, plus how teams respond. Bodhih also offers assertive communication training if you need the broader focus.
Do you run speaking up at work training online and across India?
Yes. Bodhih runs it live virtually for distributed teams and in person in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune. Master trainers also travel to the Middle East, Singapore and other regions, adapting role-plays to local workplace cultures. The recommended design is one day or three virtual sessions, plus a 60-day voice challenge.
