Why good questions are the new competitive skill
AI can answer almost anything, but only if someone frames the right question, and it cannot sit across from a stressed customer or a hesitant team member to find out what is really wrong. The human ability to ask, probe and listen is becoming more valuable, not less.
Yet many professionals default to leading or closed questions, jump to solutions and miss the root cause. Questioning skills training is a foundation for better diagnosis, better requirements, better audits and better conversations.
Curiosity and lifelong learning ranks among the top five fastest-growing skills employers prioritise.
Critical thinking learning consumption rose 37% year on year on Udemy Business.
What participants will be able to do
The right question type
Choose between open, closed, probing, clarifying, hypothetical and reflective questions for each situation.
Get to root cause
Use sequences such as the funnel and 'five whys' to move from symptoms to underlying causes.
Clear up ambiguity
Ask clarifying questions that turn vague requests and statements into specific, actionable information.
Avoid leading questions
Recognise and remove questions that suggest the answer or put people on the defensive.
Follow up well
Listen to answers closely and ask natural follow-up questions rather than working through a checklist.
Question with respect
Ask challenging questions in a tone that keeps people open, even in audits and investigations.

Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design
This one-day workshop builds the habit of asking before telling, and the skill of asking the right question for the moment. Participants discover their default question style, convert closed and leading questions at speed, build question funnels, use five whys to find root causes, listen for facts, feelings and gaps, and ask tough questions without sounding accusatory. Observers in trios tally every question type, so feedback is based on data. The capstone rotates participants through four role-based rooms, from a requirements workshop to an audit walkthrough.
Participants can choose, sequence and follow up questions that surface accurate information in their own role.

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 3 × 2-hour live virtual sessions, plus an on-the-job questioning challenge and 30-60-90 day manager check-ins. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is questioning skills training?
The recommended design is one day in person, from 09:30 to 17:30, followed by an on-the-job questioning challenge and manager check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days. It also runs as three live virtual sessions of two hours, customised to participants' roles.
What activities are included in questioning skills training?
Participants play a guess-the-job game with closed and open questions, get a tally of their own question habits, race through question conversion drills and use a funnel and five whys to find a root cause. The capstone rotates them through role-based rooms such as an audit walkthrough and a requirements workshop.
How we deliver it
Role-specific scenarios
Practice cases are built from your context, such as a requirements workshop, an audit walkthrough or a service call.
Observer feedback
In triads, an observer tracks question types and follow-ups, giving specific, data-based feedback.
Question conversion drills
Participants rapidly rewrite closed and leading questions into more effective forms.
On-the-job challenge
Each participant applies one questioning technique in a real conversation and shares the result.
Tailored versions
For audit, risk and compliance teams
Focused on walkthroughs, interviews and investigations where questions must be thorough, neutral and well documented.
For business analysts and product teams
Built around requirements elicitation, user interviews and stakeholder workshops.
For service and support teams
Emphasises quick, accurate diagnosis and empathetic questioning with customers.
How we measure impact
Following ADDIE's Evaluate stage, participants complete a recorded or observed questioning exercise before and after the program, scored on question mix, follow-up quality and diagnosis accuracy. A communication or critical-thinking assessment on AssessAll can provide a broader pre/post baseline. Managers receive a short observation guide for 30-60-90 day check-ins, and role-specific indicators, such as rework on requirements or repeat service contacts, can be reviewed where available.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What are the different types of questions?
The main types are open questions that invite explanation, closed questions that confirm facts, probing questions that go deeper, clarifying questions that remove ambiguity, reflective questions that check understanding and hypothetical questions that explore possibilities. Effective questioners mix them deliberately depending on what they need to find out.
What is a probing question?
A probing question follows up on an answer to get more detail, evidence or reasoning. Examples include 'Can you give me an example?', 'What happened next?' and 'What makes you say that?'. Probing questions help move past surface answers to the specific information needed for a good decision or diagnosis.
What is the funnel questioning technique?
The funnel technique starts with broad, open questions to understand the overall situation, then narrows to more specific probing and closed questions to pin down details. It is useful in requirements gathering, troubleshooting, interviews and audits, because it avoids jumping to conclusions before the full picture is clear.
How do you ask better questions at work?
Start with curiosity rather than assumptions, ask one question at a time, prefer open questions early, avoid leading wording and listen fully to the answer before asking the next one. Follow-up questions often reveal more than prepared ones. Questioning skills training builds these habits through focused practice.
Why are questioning skills important?
Good questions uncover real problems, reduce misunderstandings and help people think for themselves. They improve the quality of decisions, requirements, audits and customer service. They also build trust, because people feel listened to. With AI handling more routine answers, asking the right question is increasingly a human strength.
How is this different from active listening training?
Active listening focuses on attending to and understanding what others say. Questioning skills training focuses on what you ask and how you sequence questions to get useful information. The two are closely linked, and Bodhih often combines them in a customised communication or coaching skills program.
Can questioning skills training be tailored for auditors?
Yes. Using the ADDIE model, Bodhih analyses your audit or investigation approach and builds practice around walkthroughs, interviews and difficult conversations with process owners. The program focuses on questioning technique and does not replace your audit methodology, professional standards or legal guidance on investigations.
Can questioning skills training be delivered online?
Yes. The live virtual version runs as three 2-hour sessions, with breakout triads where one person asks, one answers and one observes. It suits distributed teams and mirrors how many requirement calls, audits and service conversations now happen. Bodhih has delivered 18,000+ programs since 2008, in person and live virtual.
