In brief

Technical writing training teaches engineers, developers, product and support staff to produce clear, accurate documentation: user guides, API and process documents, SOPs, release notes and knowledge-base articles. It covers audience analysis, task-based structure, style consistency and AI-assisted drafting with human review. Bodhih customises it for working engineering teams, not career changers.

01

Why documentation has become an engineering skill

In many teams there is no dedicated writer. The engineer who built the feature writes the README, the product manager drafts release notes and the support lead maintains the knowledge base. When that writing is unclear, the cost shows up as tickets, escalations, onboarding delays and repeated questions in team chats.

India's global capability centres now own entire products and platforms, not just delivery, so their documentation is read by customers and colleagues worldwide. AI can generate a first draft in seconds, but it cannot know what your users are trying to do. Technical writing training builds that judgement.

India hosts over 1,700 global capability centres employing more than 19 lakh people, according to the Government of India.

Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day lab treats documentation as part of engineering work. Day one covers audience, task-based structure and procedures, with peers trying to complete a task using only the participant's document. Day two moves to API references, SOPs, runbooks, knowledge-base articles and release notes, then sets up a team style sheet and a review workflow for AI-assisted drafts. Each participant leaves with one reviewed document ready to publish and a 30-day documentation sprint plan.

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30 each day), or 5 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 30-day documentation sprint on each team's backlog. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

How long is technical writing training?

The recommended design is two full days in person, or five live virtual sessions of three hours, followed by a 30-day documentation sprint where participants publish and test documents from their own backlog. The final design is shaped after we review your current documentation.

What activities are included in technical writing training?

Participants write blind assembly instructions, map user personas, split a messy wiki into concept, task and reference topics, run hallway usability tests, write an API quick start, rebuild a runbook under a timer, rewrite release notes, agree a team style sheet and review an AI draft line by line.

06

How we deliver it

Bring your backlog

Participants arrive with a real document that needs writing or fixing, and they leave with a reviewed draft ready to publish.

Usability testing in the room

Peers try to complete a task using only the participant's document, which exposes gaps faster than any lecture can.

Engineering-friendly pace

Short inputs, hands-on labs and checklists respect how engineers learn, and the live virtual format fits around sprint commitments.

Built on your standards

Following the ADDIE model that underpins every Bodhih program, we review your existing documentation and templates first, then design exercises that reinforce your own conventions.

07

Tailored versions

For software and GCC product teams

Emphasises API references, READMEs, architecture decision records, release notes and documentation reviews inside the sprint cycle.

For manufacturing, pharma and process teams

Focuses on SOPs, work instructions, deviation reports and change records, with attention to version control and shop-floor readability.

For support and customer success teams

Covers knowledge-base articles, troubleshooting trees and macros, written around real customer search terms and ticket data.

08

How we measure impact

Before the program, we score sample documents from each team against a clarity, accuracy and task-completion rubric, and participants complete a written communication pre-assessment on AssessAll. After a documentation sprint, a 30-60-90 day follow-up rescores new documents and repeats the assessment as a post-assessment. Teams can also track documentation-related tickets, onboarding questions and review turnaround. Results are shared with engineering leads and L&D as part of the ADDIE evaluation stage.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is technical writing training?

Technical writing training teaches people to explain complex products and processes in documents that users can follow. It covers audience analysis, task-based structure, procedures, API and process documentation, SOPs, release notes, knowledge-base articles and style consistency. Bodhih's version is designed for working engineers and product teams who write documentation as part of their job.

How do engineers improve their technical writing?

Start by writing for a specific user and task rather than describing everything the system does. Use numbered steps, consistent terms and examples. Then test the document by watching someone else use it. Our workshop builds these habits through rewrite labs and peer usability tests on the engineers' own documentation.

What is task-based documentation?

Task-based documentation is organised around what the user needs to do, such as 'Reset a user password', rather than around product features or menus. Each task has prerequisites, numbered steps and an expected result. Concepts and reference details are kept in separate topics so the steps stay short and easy to follow.

How do you write a good SOP?

A good SOP states its purpose, scope and the roles involved, then sets out numbered steps with one action each. Decision points, warnings and required records should be clearly marked. It also needs an owner and a review date. The SOP module includes practice rewriting a real procedure from the participant's workplace.

How do you write useful release notes?

Group changes by what they mean for the user: new features, improvements, fixes and anything that needs action. Lead each item with the benefit or impact in plain words, then add links to details. Avoid internal ticket jargon. Participants rewrite a recent set of their own release notes during the workshop.

Should developers use AI to write documentation?

AI can speed up outlines, first drafts and rewrites, but it can invent parameters, miss edge cases and expose confidential code if used carelessly. Developers should use approved tools, keep sensitive data out of prompts and review every line for accuracy. Our training includes a practical review workflow for AI-assisted documentation.

Is this a course for becoming a technical writer?

No. This is corporate upskilling for engineers, developers, product, QA and support professionals who write documentation alongside their main role. It focuses on the documents your teams produce every sprint. Organisations with dedicated writers sometimes include them to align standards across writers and engineers.

Can you deliver technical writing training online for distributed teams?

Yes. The live virtual format runs as five three-hour sessions with breakout labs and shared documents, which suits teams spread across Indian cities and global time zones. In-person workshops are run by master trainers who travel from Bengaluru to client sites in India and overseas.
