In brief

Executive summary writing is the skill of condensing a report, project or proposal into a short, stand-alone summary that tells a senior reader the situation, the conclusion, the ask and the risk in under a minute. This training builds that skill for one-page summaries, status updates and decision memos, including how to review AI-generated drafts.

  • Recommended: 1 day in person, or 3 × 2.5-hour live virtual sessions with a rewrite assignment between sessions, customised to your documents
  • Level: Intermediate · In person · Live virtual · Blended

Why the first paragraph now decides whether you get a decision

Senior inboxes in 2026 are crowded with dashboards, AI-generated recaps and threads that never end. A leader opening your quarterly review on a phone between calls reads the top and moves on, so the top has to carry the message.

Generative AI has made long documents cheap to produce and harder to trust. Executive summary writing is now the human filter: choosing what matters, checking the numbers and stating a clear recommendation someone can say yes to.

Workers receive about 117 emails a day, and most are skimmed in under 60 seconds.

What participants will be able to do

01

Bottom line up front

Open every summary with the conclusion or recommendation, so a reader who stops after two lines still knows what you need.

02

Half the length, same substance

Cut a ten-page report into a one-page summary without dropping the numbers, risks or dependencies that matter.

03

Decision memos that get approved

Frame options, trade-offs and a clear ask so approvers can decide in one reading instead of calling a meeting.

04

Status updates with a signal

Write weekly updates that flag what changed, what is at risk and what help is needed, rather than listing activity.

05

Confident AI editing

Turn a Copilot or ChatGPT first draft into an accurate, well-judged summary by checking facts, trimming padding and fixing tone.

06

Numbers that make sense

Present metrics with context, comparison and meaning, so figures support the argument instead of cluttering it.

03

Who should attend

  • Project and program leads who send weekly or monthly updates to sponsors
  • Analysts and consultants who turn research into recommendations
  • Managers in GCCs and shared services reporting to global leadership
  • Finance, risk and compliance professionals writing board and committee papers

  • Chiefs of staff and executive assistants who prepare briefs for CXOs

How we deliver it

Your documents, anonymised

Participants bring real reports, updates and memos, so every rewrite becomes a template they can reuse on Monday.

Before-and-after rewrites

Each concept is practised by rewriting a weak summary, then comparing versions side by side to see the difference.

The 30-second reader test

Peers play a busy executive who reads for 30 seconds and says what they understood, which exposes buried points quickly.

Spaced rewrite assignments

In the virtual format, a live work document is rewritten between sessions and reviewed by the trainer.

06

Tailored versions

For GCC and IT services teams

Built around sprint and release summaries, incident reports and updates written for onshore leadership across time zones.

For finance, risk and consulting teams

Focused on investment notes, audit findings and client-ready recommendation summaries where accuracy is non-negotiable.

Half-day refresher for leadership teams

A compact session that agrees a common summary and memo format across a function, so every paper arrives in the same shape.

07

How we measure impact

Following the Evaluate stage of ADDIE, participants submit a real summary before the program and a comparable one afterwards, and both are scored against the same rubric for clarity, structure, brevity and accuracy. A written-communication assessment on AssessAll can be added for a pre/post baseline. Managers receive a short checklist to review the next few updates their team members send, and a 30-60-90 day follow-up checks whether the new structure is sticking.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What should an executive summary include?

A good executive summary states the situation in a sentence or two, gives the conclusion or recommendation, explains the main reasons, names the key risks and says exactly what you need from the reader. It should stand alone, so a leader who never opens the full report still understands the point and can act on it.

How long should an executive summary be?

For most business documents, one page or less. Many status updates and decision memos work well at 150 to 300 words. The right length is the shortest one that still lets a senior reader decide without opening the full report. In the program, participants practise cutting their own summaries by half without losing substance.

What is the difference between an abstract and an executive summary?

An abstract, common in academic writing, describes what a paper covers so readers can decide whether to read it. An executive summary is written for decision-makers and gives them the findings, recommendation and ask upfront, so they may not need the full document at all. Business readers almost always need the second.

Can AI write an executive summary for me?

AI tools can produce a useful first draft quickly, but they often miss what matters most to your reader, smooth over risks or introduce errors. The program teaches participants to prompt for structure, then check every figure and claim, sharpen the recommendation and keep confidential information out of public tools.

How is this different from general business writing training?

General business writing covers emails, reports and tone across many situations. Executive summary writing training goes deep on one high-stakes task: writing for senior readers who have very little time. It focuses on structure, prioritisation and decision framing, which is why it suits people who already write competently.

Can the training use our own templates and documents?

Yes. Every Bodhih program is designed with the ADDIE model, which starts by analysing your current documents, templates and audiences. We then build exercises around your real status reports, board notes or client summaries, and can help your team agree a common format as part of the program.

Is the program available online for distributed teams?

Yes. The live virtual version runs as three shorter sessions with a rewrite assignment between each, which suits teams spread across cities and countries. Bodhih delivers live virtual programs across India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and beyond, and master trainers also travel from Bengaluru for in-person sessions.
