A function head leadership program prepares senior managers to run an entire function such as finance, HR, IT, sales operations or supply chain. It covers setting functional strategy, building a leadership team underneath, representing the function among peers and the CEO, and running the function's operating rhythm and budget, applied to each participant's own role.

Why the step up to function head needs deliberate preparation
Most function heads are appointed for their depth: the sharpest finance controller, the HR manager who fixed hiring, the plant manager with the cleanest numbers. Then the job changes overnight. They are expected to set a three-year direction, manage managers, defend a budget and argue for their function among peers who all want the same money.
India's GCC boom and fast-scaling startups are creating these roles faster than people are ready for them. A function head leadership program closes that gap before the appointment rather than after a rough first year, and gives succession plans a bench that can actually step up.
Global leadership roles in India's GCCs are expected to rise from about 6,500 to over 30,000 by 2030.
India has over 1,700 global capability centres employing more than 19 lakh people.
What participants will be able to do
Set the function's direction
Translate business strategy into a two-to-three-year functional agenda with a short list of priorities and clear trade-offs.
Build the team below
Design the leadership team the function needs, close capability gaps and delegate whole outcomes rather than tasks.
Earn a seat at the table
Represent the function in leadership meetings with business language, a point of view and a clear ask.
Work peers and the CEO
Map key stakeholders, anticipate their concerns and build alliances for decisions that cross functions.
Run the operating rhythm
Set up the reviews, metrics and meeting cadence that keep a function on track without the head in every detail.
Own the budget
Build, prioritise and defend the function's budget, and explain spend in terms of business outcomes.

Sample training plan: 3-day hands-on design
This three-module journey moves senior managers from running a team to running a function. Module 1 turns the business strategy into a one-page functional strategy that is challenged by peers. Module 2 designs the leadership team underneath, the operating rhythm and a budget with options. Module 3 takes participants to a simulated leadership table where they present, defend and negotiate with a panel playing the CEO and business heads. Assignments between modules make each draft real.
Participants can explain the function head shift and draft a one-page functional strategy.

Recommended: 3 one-day modules (09:30–17:30) spaced four to six weeks apart, or 6 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, with work-based assignments between modules. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is the function head readiness program?
It runs as three one-day modules spaced four to six weeks apart, usually over three to four months, or as six live virtual sessions of three hours. Assignments between modules and sponsor check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days after module 3 complete the journey.
What activities are included in the function head readiness program?
Participants draft and defend a one-page functional strategy, map their leadership team and successors, rehearse delegating outcomes to managers, design an operating rhythm, present a budget to a panel, and compete for investment in a leadership table simulation before presenting a 100-day plan to their sponsor.
How we deliver it
Your function as the case
Every participant works on their own function's strategy, team and budget, so the program produces drafts they can take straight to their CEO or business head.
Spaced modules with assignments
Four to six weeks between modules lets participants test their strategy, hold team conversations and bring back what happened.
Leadership table simulations
Participants present to a panel playing a CEO, a CFO and business heads, who ask the questions real executives ask.
Sponsor involvement
Each participant's sponsor joins a short briefing at the start and the final presentation, so the development plan has backing.
Tailored versions
For GCC function heads
Cases cover owning a function for a global parent: negotiating scope with headquarters, building local leadership depth and representing India in global forums.
For family businesses and promoter-led firms
Focus on professionalising a function, working with promoters and long-serving managers, and introducing reviews without losing speed.
Succession bench cohort
A cohort of named successors across several functions learns together, which also strengthens cross-functional relationships at the next leadership level.
How we measure impact
The program follows the ADDIE Evaluate stage. Before module 1, participants complete three AssessAll assessments: Function Head Readiness Assessment, Strategic Thinking & Business Judgment, and Stakeholder Management & Influence, repeated as a post-assessment after module 3. Sponsors hold check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days after the final module, and we review the functional strategy, team plan and budget proposal against the readiness goals agreed at the start.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What is a function head leadership program?
It is a development program for senior managers who will soon run, or have just taken over, an entire function. Instead of team-level skills, it covers functional strategy, building a leadership team underneath, the function's operating rhythm and budget, and working with peers and the CEO. Participants apply each module to their own function.
What does a function head do differently from a senior manager?
A senior manager delivers results through a team. A function head sets the direction for the whole function, chooses what it will not do, builds and develops managers of managers, owns the budget and represents the function in leadership decisions. More of the job happens with peers and the CEO than inside the team.
What skills does a head of function need?
The core set is strategic thinking, business and financial judgement, building leadership teams, stakeholder influence and clear executive communication. Function heads also need an operating rhythm that keeps work on track without them in every detail. The readiness assessment at the start shows which of these each participant should work on most.
How long does the function head readiness program take?
The recommended design is three one-day modules spaced four to six weeks apart, so the journey runs over three to four months. A live virtual version uses six three-hour sessions. Assignments between modules are part of the design, because the real learning happens when participants test their strategy and team plans at work.
How do you prepare someone to become head of a department?
Start with an honest readiness assessment, then give them real head-level work before the appointment: drafting the functional strategy, planning the leadership team, defending a budget and presenting to senior leaders. Pair this with feedback from a sponsor. A structured function head leadership program provides the frameworks, practice and feedback in one journey.
Is this program suitable for new function heads already in the role?
Yes. Many cohorts mix successors with heads appointed in the last year. New heads bring live problems, such as a team that still goes around them or a budget under review, and work on them during the modules. Successors learn from seeing those problems up close.
Can the program be delivered for our leaders across countries?
Yes. Bodhih has designed leadership programs for over 2,000 companies since 2008 and delivers in person across India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and beyond, with master trainers travelling from Bengaluru. Mixed-location cohorts can join live virtually, and examples are adapted to each region's business context.
