Team leader training prepares people who lead a small team of 5 to 15 while still delivering work themselves. It covers the move from peer to lead, allocating work fairly, running daily stand-ups and huddles, handling escalations, coaching in the moment and reporting upward. Bodhih designs it with ADDIE and customises it to each team's process and metrics.

Why team leaders are carrying more than ever
Organisations are flattening. As middle layers shrink, team leaders in IT, ITES and BPO pick up bigger teams, more client contact and more people decisions, often while still carrying a full personal workload.
The team leader is now the manager most employees see every day. When that role is done well, SLAs hold, escalations shrink and new joiners stay. Team leader training makes sure the role is learned deliberately rather than by surviving it.
Gallup data cited by Forbes shows the average manager's direct reports rose from 10.9 in 2024 to 12.1 in 2025.
ATD's 2026 State of the Industry reports 88% of organisations provide managerial and supervisory training.
What participants will be able to do
Step up from peer to lead
Hold a clear reset conversation with former teammates about what changes, what stays the same and how decisions will be made.
Allocate work with fairness
Distribute tickets, cases and tasks using skill, load and development needs, and explain the logic so no one feels dumped on.
Run stand-ups that move work
Lead a 15-minute stand-up or huddle that surfaces blockers and priorities, not status theatre.
Handle escalations calmly
Triage an escalation, take ownership with the client or stakeholder and close the loop with the team member involved.
Coach in the flow of work
Use short, on-the-spot coaching after a call, code review or quality audit to lift performance without formal meetings.
Protect their own delivery
Plan a weekly time split between personal deliverables and team leadership that their manager has agreed to.

Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design
This two-day workshop helps new and developing team leads in IT, ITES and BPO teams play the player-coach role without burning out. Participants map their week, rehearse the first one-to-one with a former peer, allocate a real ticket queue with a skill-load matrix and run a 15-minute stand-up for a hybrid team. They take the heat from an angry client in a live escalation simulation, coach after a call or code review in five minutes, and report metrics upward with a clear ask.
Participants can reset their time split, open well with former peers, allocate work fairly and run a tight stand-up.

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30, or night-shift friendly timings for BPO floors), or 5 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 60-day floor application plan. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is team leader training?
The recommended design is two days in person, with night-shift friendly timings for BPO floors, followed by a 60-day floor application plan. It also runs as five live virtual sessions of three hours each over two weeks, with on-the-job tasks in between.
What activities are included in team leader training?
Leads redraw their week, rehearse the first one-to-one with a former peer, allocate a 28-ticket queue with a skill-load matrix and run stand-ups, huddles and handovers. They take an angry client escalation call, debrief the team member afterwards and defend their team to a manager.
How we deliver it
Built around your floor
We study your process metrics, such as AHT, CSAT, SLA adherence or sprint velocity, and build cases and role-plays around them.
Short, frequent practice
Every module includes a role-play, a stand-up rehearsal or a mini-simulation so team leaders practise before they perform.
Shift-friendly scheduling
Live virtual sessions can be timed around shifts and peak hours, including split cohorts for day and night teams.
Manager reinforcement
Operations or delivery managers receive a short guide to observe stand-ups and give team leaders feedback after the program.
Tailored versions
For BPO and contact centres
Floor-focused content on pre-shift huddles, call calibration, schedule adherence and coaching agents between calls, with night-shift friendly timing.
For software and GCC delivery pods
Cases built around sprints, code reviews, onsite-offshore hand-offs and tech leads who still carry a technical load.
Two-week virtual sprint
Five short live sessions over two weeks with on-the-job assignments between them, useful for dispersed teams.
How we measure impact
We apply the Evaluate stage of ADDIE from the start. Team leaders take a pre and post assessment of core supervisory skills on AssessAll, and their managers observe one stand-up and one coaching conversation at 30 and 60 days using a simple checklist. We then review agreed operational indicators with your team, such as escalation volumes, SLA adherence, quality scores or early attrition in the teams led by participants.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What does a team leader do day to day?
A team leader plans and allocates the team's work, runs stand-ups or huddles, removes blockers, handles escalations, coaches team members and reports progress to their manager. In many IT and BPO teams they also carry their own tickets or cases. Team leader training helps them do all of this in a steady weekly rhythm rather than firefighting.
How do I balance my own work and leading the team?
Start by agreeing an explicit time split with your manager, for example 60% delivery and 40% leadership, then protect it in your calendar. Delegate tasks that others can learn from and keep only the work that truly needs you. The program includes a time-mapping exercise and a template for that conversation with your manager.
How do team leaders handle escalations?
Good team leaders triage first: how severe is it, who owns it and when is the next update due. They take ownership with the client or stakeholder, avoid blaming individuals publicly and then debrief the team member privately to learn from it. Participants practise this sequence in a live escalation simulation during the program.
What skills does a team leader need?
The core skills are planning and allocating work, running effective meetings, giving feedback, coaching, handling conflict and escalations, and communicating upward. Team leaders also need credibility in the work itself. Our team leader training focuses on the people and process skills, since most participants already have the technical depth.
How do you run a good daily stand-up?
Keep it to 15 minutes, stand or keep cameras on, and focus on three things: what is blocked, what has changed in priorities and who needs help. Move detailed problem-solving to a follow-up with only the people involved. The program includes a stand-up rehearsal with feedback, including a version for hybrid teams.
Is team leader training different from first-time manager training?
Yes. Team leaders usually lead a smaller group while still delivering work, and their authority on pay, hiring and appraisals is often limited. This program focuses on daily operational leadership. First-time manager training suits people who have moved fully into a manager role with formal responsibility for their team's performance.
Can the program run for night shifts or global teams?
Yes. We can schedule live virtual sessions around shifts, run separate cohorts for day and night teams, or deliver in person at your site, with master trainers travelling from Bengaluru. Bodhih has delivered more than 18,000 programs since 2008, including for teams working across time zones in India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
