Gamification in Training Workshop for Trainers and Designers

A design-led gamification in training workshop for trainers and L&D teams. You will learn which game mechanics support learning and which only distract, then build a classroom game and a digital gamified journey that make practice more engaging and more meaningful.

In brief

A gamification in training workshop teaches trainers and designers to apply game mechanics, such as challenges, progression, feedback and narrative, to workplace learning. Bodhih's workshop separates gamification from game-based learning, links every mechanic to a learning objective, and has participants design, playtest and refine their own classroom and digital training games.

  • Recommended: 1 day in person, or 2 × 3.5-hour live virtual sessions, customised to your team
  • Level: Intermediate · In person · Live virtual · Blended
  • Designed with the ADDIE model and customised to your context
  • Offered by Bodhih since 2008 to 2,000+ organisations across 7 regions

01

Why gamification needs a learning-first approach

Points, badges and leaderboards can lift participation for a while, but many gamified programs lose momentum once the novelty fades. The problem is usually design, not the idea.

Gamification works when every mechanic serves a learning goal: challenge builds practice, feedback builds skill and narrative builds relevance. This gamification in training workshop teaches that discipline, with every idea tested in play.

02

What participants will be able to do

01

Tell the approaches apart

Distinguish gamification, game-based learning and simulations, and choose the right approach for each need.

02

Match mechanics to objectives

Select challenge, progression, feedback, reward and narrative mechanics that directly support learning goals.

03

Design for motivation

Use self-determination theory to build autonomy, competence and relatedness into gamified learning.

04

Build classroom games

Design low-tech games, quizzes and team challenges for in-person and live virtual sessions.

05

Plan digital gamification

Sketch a gamified learning journey for an LMS or app, including levels, feedback loops and team play.

06

Avoid common pitfalls

Spot and prevent issues such as demotivating leaderboards, reward fatigue and games that crowd out learning.

03

Who should attend

  • Corporate trainers who want livelier, more interactive sessions
  • Facilitators of classroom and live virtual programs
  • Instructional designers building digital journeys
  • L&D managers exploring gamified academies or onboarding
  • Sales enablement and product training teams
  • Internal trainers in customer service and operations

How we deliver it

Learn by playing

Participants experience several training games first, then take them apart to see which mechanics did the teaching.

Design sprint format

Small teams design, build and playtest a game within the workshop, using simple materials and tools.

Structured debriefs

Every game ends with a debrief model, reinforcing that reflection turns play into learning.

Customised with ADDIE

Bodhih adapts topics, examples and game formats to your audience and delivery channels using ADDIE.

06

Tailored versions

For sales and product teams

Builds competitive but fair product-knowledge challenges and objection-handling games linked to sales behaviours.

For onboarding programs

Designs mission-based onboarding journeys that help new joiners explore culture, tools and teams.

07

How we measure impact

We measure the gamification in training workshop at Kirkpatrick Levels 1 to 3. A short pre and post assessment, which can run on AssessAll, checks understanding of mechanics and motivation principles. Each team's game is scored in a playtest against a design rubric covering objective alignment, engagement and debrief quality. At 30, 60 and 90 days, check-ins with participants and their managers track which games have been used in live sessions and what learners said.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is gamification in training?

Gamification in training means adding game elements, such as challenges, levels, feedback, points or stories, to learning that is not itself a game. The aim is to increase engagement and practice. Done well, each mechanic supports a learning objective. Done poorly, it becomes decoration that learners ignore once the novelty wears off.

What is the difference between gamification and game-based learning?

Gamification adds game mechanics to an existing learning experience, such as progress levels in an onboarding journey. Game-based learning uses a complete game, such as a business simulation or escape room, as the learning activity itself. Both are useful, and the workshop helps you decide which fits your objective, audience and budget.

Does gamification improve learning?

Gamification can improve engagement and practice, but its effect on learning depends on design. Mechanics that encourage repeated practice, useful feedback and reflection support learning. Mechanics that reward speed or simple clicking can distract from it. The workshop focuses on designing mechanics around learning goals rather than adding points for their own sake.

Do we need expensive software to gamify training?

No. Many of the most effective training games use cards, boards, flipcharts or simple online quiz and polling tools. Software helps when you want to gamify a digital journey at scale. The workshop covers low-tech classroom games first and then shows what to look for in an LMS or gamification platform.

Can gamification work in live virtual training?

Yes. Virtual sessions suit quiz battles, breakout-room missions, digital escape rooms and team challenges using whiteboard tools. The key is clear instructions, short rounds and a proper debrief. A full module covers virtual formats, and the workshop pairs well with Bodhih's virtual trainers program.

Who should attend a gamification in training workshop?

The workshop suits trainers, facilitators, instructional designers and L&D managers who want more engaging practice in their programs. No game design or technical background is needed. Sales enablement, onboarding and customer service training teams benefit especially, because their topics lend themselves to challenges, scenarios and team play.

Will leaderboards demotivate some learners?

They can. Public rankings often motivate a few top performers and discourage everyone else. The workshop shows alternatives, such as team leaderboards, personal progress tracking and mastery badges, and explains how to use competition fairly in mixed-experience groups and cultures that value harmony over open comparison.
