Why money stress shows up at work
Easy credit, buy-now-pay-later apps, rising rents and family responsibilities can stretch even a good salary. Financial worry rarely stays at home: it follows people into the office, onto the shop floor and into late-night job searches.
Indian employers are adding financial wellbeing to their 2026 wellness plans, often through regular clinics on budgeting, tax savings and emergency funds. A financial wellness program for employees is a practical, low-cost way to start, as long as it stays unbiased and free of sales pitches.
India's household debt-to-GDP ratio was 40% in 2024, up from 32% five years earlier, according to RBI data cited by SHRM India.

Sample training plan: half-day hands-on design
This three-hour workshop talks plainly about money and keeps every personal number private. Participants build a budget from their own UPI history, set an emergency fund target, calculate the true cost of a credit card balance and a pay-later purchase, decode a sample payslip and tax regime choice, and race to spot scams. Group work uses fictional employee personas, so nobody has to share their finances. It is education, not advice: no products are named or sold, and everyone leaves with a 30-day money plan.
Participants can budget from their own numbers, size an emergency fund, cost their debt, read their payslip and walk away with a 30-day money plan.

Recommended: a 3-hour in-person workshop (10:00–13:15 with a tea break), or 3 × 90-minute live virtual sessions, often within a wellbeing week, plus 30- and 90-day nudges. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is the financial wellness workshop?
The recommended design is a three-hour in-person workshop, often run as part of a wellbeing week, followed by nudges at 30 and 90 days. It also runs as three live virtual sessions of 90 minutes each. A 90-minute version covering budgeting and debt suits large employee groups.
What activities are included in the financial wellness workshop?
Participants build a budget privately from their own UPI history, size an emergency fund for different personas, play a debt game that shows the real cost of credit cards and pay-later apps, decode a sample payslip and race to spot scam messages. Personal numbers are never shared.
How we deliver it
Unbiased by design
The financial wellness program for employees is product-neutral: no funds, policies or providers are named or recommended, and no one is asked for contact details for sales follow-up.
Private and practical
Participants work on their own numbers privately, using worksheets and calculators, and never have to share personal finances with the group.
Plain language
Concepts are explained simply, with Indian examples, and sessions can be adapted for regional languages and frontline groups.
Designed with ADDIE
We start with a short needs analysis, often a confidential pulse survey, so topics match your workforce's life stages and concerns.
Tailored versions
For wellbeing weeks
A 90-minute session on budgeting and debt with a take-home worksheet, designed to sit alongside mental and physical health sessions.
For early-career and campus hires
First-salary focus: budgeting, avoiding lifestyle debt, credit scores and building savings habits early.
For frontline and plant teams
Short, visual sessions in regional languages with practical tools for monthly budgets, loans and scam awareness.
How we measure impact
Following the ADDIE model, we measure change through a short, anonymous financial confidence survey before and after the workshop, and a simple knowledge check on budgeting, debt and emergency funds. At 30, 60 and 90 days, optional follow-up nudges and pulse questions ask whether participants have created a budget, started an emergency fund or reduced high-interest debt. Results are shared with HR only in aggregate to protect privacy, alongside any wellbeing or EAP utilisation data you track.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What is a financial wellness program for employees?
It is an employer-provided program that helps employees manage everyday money matters with more confidence, such as budgeting, debt, emergency savings, tax basics and planning for goals. The aim is to reduce financial stress, which affects wellbeing and focus at work. Good programs are educational, private and unbiased, and they do not push financial products.
Will the workshop recommend specific investments or products?
No. The program is strictly product-neutral. We explain principles such as risk, return, diversification and the role of insurance, but do not name or recommend funds, policies, apps or providers. It is general education, not personal financial advice. Employees who want tailored advice are encouraged to consult a qualified, registered adviser of their choice.
Why should employers offer financial wellness programs?
Financial worry affects concentration, health and retention, and many employees have never had structured money education. A workshop is a practical, low-cost way to support people, especially early-career staff facing easy credit and rising costs. It also complements other wellbeing efforts, since money stress often sits underneath broader stress and anxiety.
How do you build an emergency fund on a salary?
Start small and automate it. Decide a first target, such as one month of essential expenses, then set up an automatic transfer on payday into a separate, easily accessible account. Increase the amount when you get a raise or clear a loan. The workshop helps participants calculate a target that suits their own situation.
How can employees reduce credit card and loan debt?
List every debt with its interest rate, keep up minimum payments on all of them, and put any extra money towards either the highest-interest debt or the smallest balance first. Avoid new borrowing while repaying. The workshop explains both methods, the true cost of revolving credit and pay-later schemes, and how to protect your credit score.
Does the workshop cover income tax?
It covers the basics: reading a payslip, understanding salary components and how the choice of tax regime can change take-home pay. It does not calculate anyone's tax or give filing advice, since rules change and individual situations differ. Participants leave with a list of useful questions for a qualified tax professional.
Is personal financial information kept private?
Yes. Participants work on their own figures privately using worksheets or calculators and are never asked to share personal numbers with the group, the facilitator or the employer. Surveys used for measurement are anonymous and reported to HR only in aggregate. This matters, because people only engage honestly when they feel safe.
Can the program be delivered across India and the Gulf?
Yes. Bodhih has facilitated more than 18,000 programs since 2008, in person and live virtual, across India, the Middle East and Asia. The core content is designed for Indian employees, and we adapt examples for expatriate staff in the Gulf, such as managing remittances and savings across two countries.
