Unconscious Bias Training for the Workplace

Unconscious bias training that goes beyond awareness. Participants understand how mental shortcuts shape everyday judgements, then learn specific habits and process changes that reduce bias in hiring, performance reviews, work allocation and meetings. The tone is practical and respectful, focused on better decisions rather than blame.

In brief

Unconscious bias training helps employees understand how automatic mental shortcuts can distort judgements about people, and what to do about it. Bodhih's evidence-aware program moves quickly from awareness to action: structured interviews, clear evaluation criteria, inclusive meeting practices and decision checklists that reduce the room for bias in real workplace processes.

01

Why awareness alone is not enough

Everyone uses mental shortcuts, and at work they can quietly influence who gets hired, stretched, promoted or heard in meetings. In India that can include bias linked to gender, age, region, language, college or accent, alongside the cultural differences present in global teams.

Evidence reviews suggest that awareness sessions on their own seldom change behaviour for long. That is why our unconscious bias training spends most of its time on decisions and processes, where changes are easier to see and sustain.

Evidence that unconscious bias training alone changes behaviour is limited; structural changes such as structured interviews show stronger promise.

Use structured interviews, job-relevant criteria and independent scoring to reduce bias in selection.

Review performance on evidence

Apply clear rating criteria and calibration practices to reduce recency and similarity bias in appraisals.

How we deliver it

Evidence-aware design

We are open about what bias training can and cannot do, and put the emphasis on behaviour and process changes that have stronger support.

Respectful, not accusatory

The program treats bias as a shared human tendency, which reduces defensiveness and makes honest discussion possible.

Real decision scenarios

In the ADDIE Analyse phase we review your hiring, appraisal and meeting practices so cases mirror decisions made in your organisation.

Process owners in the room

HR and process owners join the final module so agreed changes, such as structured interview guides, can be put in place quickly.

06

Tailored versions

For hiring managers and interview panels

A focused workshop on structured interviewing, scoring rubrics and panel discussions, closely linked to competency-based interviewing.

For leadership teams

Covers bias in promotion, succession and strategic decisions, and how leaders can sponsor process changes and model inclusive behaviour.

For global and multicultural teams

Adds cultural differences in communication, accents and working styles, and how these can be misread as competence or commitment.

07

How we measure impact

Because awareness is not the end goal, we measure decisions and processes, and pre and post assessments on AssessAll check understanding of bias and of the practical techniques. With HR, we agree process indicators such as use of structured interview guides, scoring consistency across panels or calibration practices adopted. At 30, 60 and 90 days, managers and HR review team action plans and, where data allows, aggregated patterns in hiring or promotion.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is unconscious bias training?

Unconscious bias training helps people understand how automatic mental shortcuts influence judgements about others, often without their awareness, and what they can do to reduce the effect. Effective programs go beyond awareness to practical changes, such as structured interviews, clear evaluation criteria and inclusive meeting habits, which make decisions fairer and more consistent across the organisation.

Does unconscious bias training work?

Awareness-only training has limited evidence of lasting behaviour change, and poorly handled sessions can create resistance. Training is more useful when it teaches specific techniques and is linked to changes in processes, such as structured interviews and calibrated reviews. That is how this program is designed, and why we measure process changes rather than attendance or attitudes alone.

What are examples of unconscious bias at work?

Common examples include rating a candidate higher because they went to your college, treating fluent English as a sign of competence, giving high-visibility projects to people who resemble you, remembering only recent events in appraisals and assuming a parent is less available for travel. These judgements often feel perfectly reasonable in the moment, which is what makes them hard to spot.

How can organisations reduce bias in hiring?

Organisations reduce hiring bias by defining job-relevant criteria before seeing candidates, using structured interviews with the same questions for everyone, scoring answers independently against a rubric before discussion and involving diverse panels. Reviewing job descriptions for exclusionary language helps too. The program includes a dedicated module and practice on these techniques for hiring managers and panels.

Is this program about blaming certain groups?

No, the program treats bias as a universal feature of human thinking that affects everyone, including facilitators. The tone is respectful and practical, focused on making better decisions rather than labelling people. Participants are not asked to disclose personal views, and discussions centre on workplace scenarios and processes that everyone can improve together.

How do you make unconscious bias training effective?

Make it practical and connected to real decisions, focusing on a few high-impact processes, such as hiring and reviews, and build in checklists or structured methods that reduce reliance on memory and instinct. Involve process owners, follow up after the session and track simple indicators. One-off awareness sessions rarely achieve much on their own.

How does this relate to diversity and inclusion training?

Unconscious bias training is one component of a broader diversity and inclusion approach, focused specifically on how judgements and decisions are made. Bodhih's diversity and inclusion and gender inclusion programs cover wider topics such as inclusive culture, policies and allyship. Many clients combine them into a single learning path, customised to their strategy and workforce.
