Situational Leadership Training for Managers

The same manager can be too hands-on with a senior engineer and too hands-off with a new joiner on the same morning. Our situational leadership training helps managers read each person's readiness for a task and flex their style, from directing to delegating.

One style does not fit a mixed team

Today's teams mix freshers and veterans, specialists and generalists, people in the office and people on screen. A manager with a single style will over-manage some and under-support others, often in the same week.

Situational leadership training gives managers a clear, memorable way to decide how much direction and support each person needs on each task, so they can stop guessing and have an honest conversation about it.

How we deliver it

Your team, your tasks

Managers diagnose their real team members on real tasks throughout the program, so the model is applied from day one.

Multi-scenario role-plays

Participants lead different characters with different needs in quick succession, building the habit of flexing.

A one-page diagnostic and style guide helps managers use the model in daily work.

Independent design

Bodhih's program teaches widely used situational leadership concepts in its own materials and does not use licensed content.

Tailored versions

For new managers

A foundation version that pairs situational leadership with delegation and one-on-ones for the first year in role.

For technical and project teams

Uses cases on assigning complex technical tasks, onboarding engineers and leading specialists who know more than the manager.

For sales teams

Applies the model to onboarding new sellers, coaching mid-performers and delegating key accounts to experienced reps.

07

How we measure impact

Evaluation follows the Evaluate stage of ADDIE. Managers complete a pre and post assessment of style flexibility and diagnosis on AssessAll, Bodhih's AI assessment platform, with an optional 360° pulse from their teams on direction and support. Reporting managers hold check-ins at 30 and 45 days on the application plan. With HR, we review agreed indicators such as time-to-productivity of new joiners or delegation levels.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is situational leadership?

Situational leadership is a widely used approach in which a manager adjusts their style to the needs of each person on a specific task. The mix of direction and support depends on the person's competence and commitment. Situational leadership training helps managers diagnose these needs and flex their style accordingly.

What are the four situational leadership styles?

The four styles are commonly described as directing, coaching, supporting and delegating. Directing gives high direction and low support; coaching gives both high; supporting gives high support with less direction; delegating gives low amounts of both. Managers practise each style with realistic role-plays during the program.

How do you diagnose a team member's development level?

Look at one task at a time. Assess competence, meaning knowledge and skill, and commitment, meaning confidence and motivation. Ask questions, review recent work and listen for enthusiasm or doubt. A person can be highly developed on one task and a beginner on another. The training includes a simple diagnostic tool.

What are the limitations of situational leadership?

The model simplifies human behaviour, and diagnosis can be subjective. It focuses on one-to-one leadership more than team dynamics or culture, and managers may label people rather than tasks. Used thoughtfully, it remains a useful practical guide. Our program addresses these limits and connects the model to coaching and feedback.

Is Bodhih certified to deliver Situational Leadership?

No. Bodhih runs its own independent program that teaches the widely used concepts of situational leadership. Bodhih is not affiliated with or certified by The Ken Blanchard Companies or the Center for Leadership Studies, which own related trademarks, and does not issue their certifications or use their licensed materials.

How long does situational leadership training take?

Our recommended design is one and a half days in person or four 2.5-hour live virtual sessions, followed by a 45-day application period with check-ins. A shorter one-day version suits experienced managers. The final design is customised after a needs analysis with your HR and business leaders.

Can situational leadership be combined with other programs?

Yes. It pairs well with delegation, coaching and first-time manager programs, and many organisations include it in a mid-level manager journey. Bodhih can design a blended path that combines these topics, with assessments on AssessAll to track progress across modules.

Does situational leadership work with remote team members?

Yes, with some care. Diagnosing development level is harder when you see less of someone's work, so managers need regular check-ins, shared progress boards and direct questions about confidence. Directing and coaching styles may need more structured touchpoints online. The program includes remote and hybrid scenarios for practising these adjustments.
