Why discovery has to go deeper in 2026
Buyers no longer need a seller to explain the basics. They use AI tools and peer networks to research, then come to the first call wanting help to make sense of it all. A discovery call that only asks 'what are your challenges?' wastes their time.
Sales discovery call training helps sellers bring a point of view, test the buyer's assumptions and uncover the business impact that justifies change. Good discovery also feeds everything that follows: the demo, the proposal and the forecast.
45% of B2B buyers surveyed by Gartner said they used generative AI during a recent purchase.
69% of B2B buyers prefer to validate AI-generated insights with sales reps.
What participants will be able to do
Arrive already informed
Complete focused pre-call research so the first ten minutes are spent on the buyer's priorities, not basic facts.
Sequence questions with purpose
Move from situation to problem, impact and desired outcome in a natural flow rather than an interrogation.
Quantify business impact
Help buyers put numbers on the cost of their problem so the case for change becomes visible and shareable.
Listen for what is not said
Use active listening, summarising and silence to surface concerns, priorities and internal politics.
Share insight, not a pitch
Offer a relevant perspective or pattern that reframes the buyer's thinking and earns credibility.
Map the buying group
Uncover who else is involved, how they will decide and what each stakeholder needs to see.

Sample training plan: 1.5-day hands-on design
This one-and-a-half-day workshop builds the discovery skills that every demo, proposal and forecast depends on. Participants bring one upcoming first meeting with a real prospect. They research it in ten minutes, form problem hypotheses, rewrite weak questions, layer questions from symptoms to root causes, help a buyer put numbers on the problem, and listen for what is not said. Every practice call is recorded and reviewed against a scorecard. The capstone is a recorded discovery meeting on their own prospect with a three-person buying group.
Participants can plan a discovery call, sequence layered questions and help a buyer put numbers on a problem.

Recommended: 1.5 days in person (day 1 09:30–17:30, day 2 09:30–13:00), or 4 × 2.5-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 60-day record-and-review follow-up. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is sales discovery and questioning training?
The recommended design is one and a half days in person: a full day from 09:30 to 17:30 and a morning to 13:00, followed by a 60-day record-and-review follow-up. It also runs as four live virtual sessions of two and a half hours.
What activities are included in sales discovery training?
Participants critique a sample discovery call, research and plan a meeting with their own prospect, rewrite their ten usual questions, drill layered questioning with recorded calls, help a buyer quantify a problem and finish with a recorded meeting with a three-person buying group on their own prospect.
How we deliver it
Real prospects, real plans
Participants plan discovery for their own upcoming meetings, so the preparation done in training is used within days.
Customised through ADDIE
We analyse recorded calls and win-loss notes to see where discovery breaks down today, then design questions and cases for your market.
Record, review, repeat
Sellers record practice calls, review them against a discovery scorecard and try again, building skill through repetition.
Questions library for the team
Each cohort builds a shared bank of tested discovery questions by persona and industry that managers can keep updating.
Tailored versions
For SaaS and IT services sellers
Discovery for digital transformation, cloud and software deals, including technical stakeholders and global buying groups.
For banking and insurance relationship managers
Needs-based discovery with business owners and families, focused on suitability, goals and long-term relationships.

How we measure impact
Our evaluation follows ADDIE. Sellers complete a scenario-based pre- and post-assessment on AssessAll covering question quality, listening and impact discovery. Managers score recorded discovery calls against a shared rubric at 30 days. At 60 and 90 days we review agreed indicators such as first-meeting-to-opportunity conversion, qualification accuracy and deal size, and send your sales leadership a concise impact summary with recommended next steps.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What is a sales discovery call?
A sales discovery call is an early conversation where the seller learns about the buyer's situation, problems, goals and decision process. The aim is to understand whether there is a real need worth solving and how your offer could help. A good discovery call also gives the buyer new insight, so it feels valuable on both sides.
What questions should you ask on a discovery call?
Start with questions about the buyer's current situation and priorities, then explore problems, their causes and business impact. Ask what a successful outcome looks like, who else is involved and how decisions are made. The program teaches how to sequence these questions naturally and adapt them to each stakeholder.
How long should a discovery call be?
Most B2B discovery calls run 30 to 45 minutes, although complex deals may need several conversations with different stakeholders. What matters more than length is preparation and focus. Participants learn to set a clear agenda, prioritise their most important questions and end with an agreed next step.
How do you prepare for a discovery call?
Research the company, the person and recent events, form two or three hypotheses about likely problems, and plan your key questions. Decide the objective of the call and the next step you will propose. The training includes a one-page discovery plan and shows how to use AI tools for research while verifying facts.
How is this different from general questioning skills training?
General questioning skills training builds curiosity and inquiry for any workplace conversation. Sales discovery call training applies questioning specifically to buyers, covering research, business impact, buying group dynamics, qualification and next steps. Teams that want broader questioning skills across functions can pair it with our questioning skills program.
Can discovery training help reduce deals lost to no decision?
Yes, because many deals stall when the buyer never fully sees the cost of staying as they are. Strong discovery quantifies that cost and involves the right stakeholders early. The program focuses on building a clear case for change, which gives buying groups the confidence to act.
Is the sales discovery call training available online?
Yes. We recommend four live virtual sessions of about two and a half hours, with recorded practice calls between sessions. This format works well for teams across India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and other regions. Our master trainers can also deliver in person, travelling from Bengaluru.
