Leadership Styles Training for Managers of Mixed Teams

The same manager can be too hands-on with a senior engineer and too hands-off with a new joiner on the same morning. Our leadership styles training helps managers read what each person needs on each task and adjust how much direction and support they give.

One style does not fit a mixed team

Today's teams mix freshers and veterans, specialists and generalists, people in the office and people on screen. A manager with a single default style will crowd some people and leave others stranded, often in the same week.

Leadership styles training gives managers a practical way to decide how much direction and support each person needs on each task, so they can stop guessing and have an honest conversation about it.

What participants will be able to do

01

Know your default

Recognise your natural leadership habits and where they help or quietly hold your team back.

02

Read the person and the task

Gauge each person's skill and confidence on a specific piece of work, rather than labelling the whole person.

03

Set the direction dial

Decide how much clarity on goals, steps, deadlines and check-ins someone needs to succeed.

04

Set the support dial

Decide how much encouragement, listening and involvement in decisions will build someone's confidence and ownership.

05

Agree the approach openly

Discuss with each team member how you will work together on a task, so expectations are shared from the start.

06

Adjust as people grow

Step back as capability rises, step in early when performance slips and recover quickly when you misjudge.

03

Who should attend

  • New managers learning to lead people with very different experience levels
  • Mid-level managers leading mixed teams of freshers and specialists
  • Tech leads and project managers assigning work across skill levels
  • Sales and operations managers onboarding new joiners quickly
  • Managers who default to either micromanaging or hands-off leadership

How we deliver it

Your team, your tasks

Managers work on their real team members and real tasks throughout, so the approach is applied from day one.

Rapid-switch role-plays

Participants lead different characters with different needs in quick succession, building the habit of adapting.

Simple job aids

A one-page planner helps managers decide on direction and support for each person before key conversations.

Built by Bodhih

The program uses Bodhih's own materials and practical tools, designed with ADDIE around your managers' real situations.

06

Tailored versions

For new managers

A foundation version that pairs flexible leadership habits with delegation and one-on-ones for the first year in role.

For technical and project teams

Uses cases on assigning complex technical tasks, onboarding engineers and leading specialists who know more than the manager.

For sales teams

Applies the approach to onboarding new sellers, coaching mid-performers and handing key accounts to experienced reps.

07

How we measure impact

Evaluation follows the Evaluate stage of ADDIE. Managers complete a pre and post assessment of style flexibility and judgement on AssessAll, Bodhih's AI assessment platform, with an optional 360° pulse from their teams on clarity and support. Reporting managers hold check-ins at 30 and 45 days on the application plan. With HR, we review agreed indicators such as time-to-productivity of new joiners or how much work is being delegated.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What are the main leadership styles?

Commonly discussed styles range from directive, where the leader sets goals and steps, through coaching and participative approaches, to empowering styles that hand over ownership. No single style is best. Effective managers move along this range depending on the person, the task and the situation, which is what leadership styles training helps them do.

How do you adapt your leadership style to different people?

Look at one task at a time and ask two questions: how skilled is this person at it, and how confident do they feel? Someone new usually needs clearer direction; someone capable but unsure needs encouragement; someone experienced needs room. Then agree the approach openly so the person knows what to expect.

How do you know how much direction someone needs?

Review recent work on that task, ask how they plan to approach it and listen for certainty or hesitation. Gaps in knowledge or unclear plans signal a need for more direction. Solid plans with shaky confidence call for more support. The program includes a simple planner for making this judgement quickly.

Is it inconsistent to lead people differently?

Not if you are consistent about the principle. Treating everyone identically often means over-managing experienced people and under-supporting new ones. Being open about why you are giving more or less guidance on a task, and agreeing it together, is what keeps adapted leadership fair and credible to the team.

How do you stop micromanaging your team?

Start by checking whether the person really needs close direction on this task or whether it is your own habit. Agree clear outcomes and check-in points instead of reviewing every step. Increase autonomy as results come in. Participants build a personal plan to step back on two or three specific tasks.

How long does leadership styles training take?

Our recommended design is one and a half days in person or four 2.5-hour live virtual sessions, followed by a 45-day application period with check-ins. A shorter one-day version suits experienced managers. The final design is customised after a needs analysis with your HR and business leaders.

Can leadership styles training be combined with other programs?

Yes. It pairs well with delegation, coaching and first-time manager programs, and many organisations include it in a mid-level manager journey. Bodhih can design a blended path that combines these topics, with assessments on AssessAll to track progress across modules.

Does adapting your style work with remote team members?

Yes, with some care. Judging what someone needs is harder when you see less of their work, so managers need regular check-ins, shared progress boards and direct questions about confidence. Newer remote colleagues may need more structured touchpoints. The program includes hybrid scenarios for practising these adjustments.
