Why oil and gas operations need a new generation of leaders
Across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and India's refining and offshore hubs, many experienced operators and superintendents are approaching retirement. Their judgement took decades to build, and the people stepping up often lead crews of ten nationalities on a 28-day rotation.
At the same time, control rooms are going digital and companies are investing in lower-carbon assets. Oil and gas leadership training prepares supervisors to lead through that change: keeping crews aligned across shifts, coaching younger technicians and making clear decisions when plans slip.
Leadership and social influence rose 22 percentage points as a core skill since 2023.
Employers expect 39% of workers' core skills to change by 2030.
What participants will be able to do
Lead crews you do not see every day
Keep standards, morale and information consistent across back-to-back rotations and opposite shifts.
Brief and hand over with rigour
Run pre-shift briefings and crew-change handovers that carry status, open jobs, concerns and decisions without gaps.
Lead people through planned shutdowns
Prepare crews and third-party teams for a shutdown, keep morale steady through long shifts and close it out with a useful review.
Decide under pressure
Use a short, repeatable routine to gather facts, consult the right people and commit when time and information are limited.
Lead multinational crews
Communicate clearly across languages and cultures, check understanding and build one crew identity.
Grow the next supervisors
Coach technicians and operators into supervisor roles and capture the know-how of experienced staff before they retire.

- Daily coordination meetings that resolve clashes quickly
- Keeping energy and attention up through long shifts
- Closing out with a blame-free review the next shutdown can use
05Decisions under pressureModule 5 · 2 hours+
- A short routine: facts, options, consult, commit, communicate
- Recognising when to stop and escalate rather than push on
- Communicating a decision to a tired, doubtful crew
- Simulation: an unplanned trip during a crew change

- Coaching a technician into a supervisor in 90 days
- Capturing know-how from experienced staff before they retire
- Leading crews through new digital tools and remote operations centres
- Talking about the energy transition with crews who worry about their future
Sample training plan: 3-day hands-on design
This three-day design builds the people side of leading crews in oil, gas and petrochemicals. Day one sets crew standards and drills pre-shift briefings and crew-change handovers. Day two tackles multinational crews and a planned shutdown, from preparing third-party crews to a blame-free close-out. Day three rehearses decisions under pressure, coaching a technician into a supervisor and capturing know-how from retiring experts. Each participant leaves with a development plan for one future supervisor.
Participants can set crew standards and run briefings and crew-change handovers without gaps.

Recommended: 3 days in person at or near site (08:00–16:00 to suit site hours), or 6 × 3-hour live virtual sessions timed around rotations, plus a 90-day follow-up. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.
How long is oil and gas leadership training?
The recommended design is three days in person at or near site, running on site hours, followed by a 90-day follow-up. It also runs as six live virtual sessions of three hours each, scheduled around crew rotations.
What activities are included in oil and gas leadership training?
Supervisors drill pre-shift briefings and crew-change handovers, lead a mixed crew from culture cards, plan the people side of a refinery shutdown, run a coordination meeting, lead through a unit trip simulation and build a plan to develop a technician into a supervisor.
How we deliver it
Site-realistic scenarios
Cases come from upstream, refining, gas processing and oilfield services, with role cards for crew members, control rooms and service partners.
Built around rotations
Live virtual sessions are timed so participants on different rotations can attend, with assignments they complete on their next hitch.
Multicultural facilitation
Facilitators adapt pace and language for mixed groups of Gulf nationals, Indian and other expatriate supervisors.
Mentor pairing
Where possible, each participant is paired with an experienced superintendent for knowledge transfer after the program.
Tailored versions
For refineries and petrochemical complexes in India
Cases from Gujarat, Mumbai and Assam operations, with Hindi and English facilitation and a focus on shift superintendents.
For Gulf upstream and gas operations
Delivered in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar or Kuwait, with emphasis on multinational crews and developing national supervisors.
Technician-to-supervisor pathway
A blended journey of short modules between rotations, with a mentor superintendent and a 90-day leadership project.
How we measure impact
Oil and gas leadership training follows the Evaluate stage of the ADDIE model. Participants complete an AssessAll pre-assessment and post-assessment on Crisis & High-Stakes Decision Making and Shift Handover & Continuity Judgment. Superintendents and managers hold structured check-ins, and a 30-60-90 day follow-up reviews handover quality, briefing habits and progress on each participant's development plan for a technician or junior supervisor.
Pair this program with AssessAll, Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What is oil and gas leadership training?
Oil and gas leadership training is a program that builds people-leadership skills for supervisors, superintendents and managers in upstream, refining, petrochemicals and oilfield services. It covers leading rotational and multinational crews, briefings and handovers, planned shutdowns, decisions under pressure and developing the next generation of supervisors. It complements, and does not replace, technical training.
What leadership skills do oil and gas supervisors need?
They need to brief and hand over clearly, set and hold standards across rotations, lead crews from many cultures and make sound decisions when time is short. Coaching younger technicians and passing on experience matter more each year as senior staff retire. Our program builds each skill through realistic site scenarios.
How do you lead a rotational crew you rarely see?
Agree a small set of standards with your back-to-back counterpart and hold them identically. Use structured crew-change handovers, a short written log and a regular call between rotations. Recognise good work quickly, even remotely. The program includes a handover drill and a template for working with your back-to-back supervisor.
How do you prepare a technician to become a supervisor?
Start before the promotion: give them small leadership tasks such as running a briefing, pair them with an experienced supervisor and discuss what they observe. After the move, coach weekly on handovers, feedback and decisions. Our technician-to-supervisor pathway uses a 90-day plan and mentor pairing to make the step manageable.
How do oil and gas leaders handle decisions under pressure?
Strong leaders use a simple, practised routine: get the facts, consider options, consult the right people, commit and communicate. They also know when to stop and escalate. In the program, supervisors rehearse this routine in simulations such as an unplanned trip during a crew change, then review what they did.
How long is the oil and gas leadership training program?
Our recommended design is three days in person at or near site, or six three-hour live virtual sessions timed around rotations, followed by a 90-day follow-up. A two-day version suits first-line supervisors. The final design is customised after a needs analysis with your operations and learning teams.
How is this different from plant manager training?
Plant manager training is for leaders running a whole manufacturing site and its business results. Oil and gas leadership training focuses on the realities of energy operations: rotational and multinational crews, crew-change handovers, planned shutdowns and the move from technician to supervisor. It suits supervisors and superintendents as well as managers, and the cases come from fields, refineries and gas plants.
Do you run oil and gas leadership training in Saudi Arabia and the UAE?
Yes. Bodhih's master trainers travel from Bengaluru to sites and training centres in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait, as well as Gujarat, Mumbai and Assam. Live virtual cohorts suit crews spread across fields and rotations, with sessions scheduled around crew changes.
