Why every manager now needs to think commercially

Flatter structures push more decisions down to managers, and AI is reshaping cost bases and business models fast. A manager who can only speak about activity, not value, struggles to win budget or make sound trade-offs.

Many managers were trained as engineers, clinicians, designers or specialists, and were never shown how the business fits together. Business acumen training closes that gap, going beyond finance basics to the strategic and commercial logic behind decisions.

Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day design teaches managers how their business really makes money by making them run one. Day 1 maps the organisation's model, builds driver trees, works out unit economics and reads the P&L, balance sheet and cash flow with real-looking figures. Day 2 is decisions: trade-off cases, a multi-round business simulation where teams set prices, hire, invest and face market shocks, and a business case pitch to a finance panel. Each participant reframes one live decision from their own team in value terms.

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30) including a business simulation, or 5 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a reframed business case presented within 30 days. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

How long is business acumen training?

The recommended design is two days in person, from 09:30 to 17:30, including a multi-round business simulation, or five live virtual sessions of three hours. Participants then present a reframed business case to their manager within 30 days, with check-ins at 60 and 90 days.

What activities are included in business acumen training?

Participants run a paper chai stall, map their own company's business model, build driver trees and unit economics, rebuild jumbled financial statements, work a pricing case and run a company through a five-round business simulation, ending with a business case pitch to a finance panel.

How we deliver it

Built on your business model

In the Analyse and Design stages we map your revenue model and metrics, so the program speaks your business language.

Simulation learning

A multi-round business simulation lets managers feel the consequences of trade-offs in a safe setting.

Leaders in the room

Where possible, a finance or business leader joins a session to share how real decisions are made.

Apply it at work

Each participant reframes one live team decision or proposal using the tools and presents it after the program.

07

Tailored versions

For GCCs and technology leaders

Covers how the parent company makes money, cost-centre versus value-centre thinking and building business cases for technology investment.

For support functions

For HR, IT, procurement and admin leaders who want to show commercial value and speak the language of the business.

High-potential cohort

A blended journey with simulation, mentoring by senior leaders and a capstone business case presented to the leadership team.

08

How we measure impact

We apply the ADDIE Evaluate phase through a pre and post business acumen assessment on AssessAll, simulation performance across rounds, and the quality of each participant's reframed business case, reviewed with their manager. At 30, 60 and 90 days we check whether proposals and decisions are being framed in value and trade-off terms, and gather feedback from reporting managers and finance partners.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is business acumen?

Business acumen is the ability to understand how an organisation makes money and to make decisions that improve its results. It combines financial awareness, knowledge of customers and competitors, an eye for value drivers and sound judgement on trade-offs. It helps managers see how their team's work affects the wider business.

How can managers improve their business acumen?

Start by learning your company's business model and key metrics, then ask finance colleagues how your team's work shows up in the numbers. Practise making trade-off decisions with data. Business acumen training speeds this up with structured tools, a simulation and cases from your own industry.

What is the difference between business acumen and financial literacy?

Financial literacy is understanding the numbers: P&L, balance sheet and cash flow. Business acumen is broader. It uses that understanding alongside knowledge of customers, markets, operations and strategy to make better decisions. Our program includes finance basics but spends most time on value drivers and trade-offs.

Why is business acumen important for leaders?

Leaders make decisions that affect revenue, cost and risk. Without business acumen, they may optimise their own function at the expense of the whole, or struggle to win support for proposals. Strong business acumen helps leaders set better priorities, build credible business cases and earn trust from senior stakeholders.

Is business acumen training suitable for technical managers?

Yes. Engineers, scientists and other specialists often gain the most because their training rarely covered business models. We use examples from their world, such as the cost of technical debt, cloud spend or project utilisation, so the concepts connect quickly to their daily decisions.

Do participants need to share confidential financial data?

No. We can use your published figures, simplified models or a realistic fictional company based on your industry. If you choose to share internal data, it is used only within the program. The concepts transfer either way, and participants practise with their own team metrics.

How is this different from finance for non-finance managers?

Finance for non-finance managers focuses on reading financial statements and budgeting. Business acumen training is broader and more strategic: it explores business models, value drivers, unit economics, trade-offs and business cases. Many organisations run the finance program first and this one as the next step.

What does the program look like and where is it delivered?

Our recommended design is two days in person, including a business simulation, or five live virtual sessions. It is customised to your business model. Bodhih, working since 2008 with 2,000+ companies, delivers in person across India and the Middle East with facilitators from Bengaluru, or live virtually.
