Why sales managers need a sharper way to hire

A regional manager in Pune needs two sellers before the next quarter. The candidate who talks confidently and reminds the manager of their younger self gets the offer. Six months later the territory is quiet, and the search starts again.

Sales hiring usually sits with busy managers who have never been taught to interview for sales. Charm is easy to see in an hour, while drive, honesty about numbers and resilience after rejection need deliberate tests, which this workshop gives them.

What participants will be able to do

01

Define the real profile

Write a hiring profile from what wins in the specific territory, segment and sales motion, not a generic wish list.

02

Screen for drive, not charm

Ask questions that reveal effort, persistence and recovery from rejection rather than polish.

03

Run a selling exercise

Use a short role-play that shows how the candidate actually sells, listens and handles objections.

04

Check numbers and references

Probe past targets, results and context, and run reference calls that surface facts, not compliments.

05

Hire beyond your own image

Spot similarity bias and use a shared scorecard so decisions rest on evidence.

06

Plan the first 90 days so the new hire builds pipeline and closes early with support.

Sample training plan: half-day hands-on design

This half-day workshop gives sales managers a repeatable way to hire sellers who sell. Managers build a hiring profile and scorecard for a real open role, practise drive and resilience questions on mock candidates and design and run a ten-minute selling exercise. They then probe past numbers, rehearse a fact-finding reference call and catch similarity bias in a mock debrief. Each manager leaves with a 90-day plan to get the next hire to a first deal.

How long is sales hiring training?

The recommended design is a half day in person, or two live virtual sessions of two hours each, followed by a 90-day review of each manager's next hire.

What activities are included in sales hiring training?

Managers build a profile and scorecard for a real role, practise drive and resilience questions, design and run a ten-minute selling exercise, rehearse reference calls, catch similarity bias in a mock debrief and plan the new hire's first 90 days.

06

How we deliver it

Your next real hire

Managers bring an open or upcoming role, and the profile, questions and selling exercise are built for that role in the room.

Live mock interviews

Trained facilitators play polished but weak candidates and quiet but strong ones, so managers practise seeing past first impressions.

Shared language with HR

Talent acquisition partners can join, so recruiters and managers use the same scorecard and debrief format.

Short, practical format

A half day suits busy sales managers, with a 90-day review of the next hire to make the habits stick.

07

Tailored versions

For field sales and distribution

Profiles and exercises focus on beat plans, dealer relationships, travel and the daily grind of territory selling.

For B2B, SaaS and inside sales

Covers account executives and inside sellers, with discovery-call exercises and probing of pipeline and quota history.

Joint session with talent acquisition

Sales managers and recruiters build the profile and scorecard together, then agree who screens what at each stage.

08

How we measure impact

We use the Evaluate phase of ADDIE to track impact. Managers complete AssessAll pre and post assessments on Sales Hiring Judgement — Manager Level and Interviewer Judgment & Hiring Bias, and can use the Sales Drive & Resilience Profile with shortlisted candidates. Their own managers and HR partners check in at 30, 60 and 90 days, reviewing scorecards, the new hire's ramp-up and whether the sales hiring training changed how decisions were made.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is sales hiring training?

Sales hiring training is a workshop that teaches sales managers how to recruit sellers who will actually sell. It covers writing the right profile, screening for drive and resilience, running selling exercises in interviews, checking past numbers and references, reducing bias and onboarding new hires to a first deal. Bodhih runs it as a focused half day.

What should managers look for when hiring salespeople?

Look for evidence of drive, persistence after rejection, curiosity about customers, honest reporting of past results and the ability to take coaching. Match these to what wins in your territory and sales cycle. Confidence and charm matter less than they seem in an interview, so the workshop teaches managers to test for what predicts results instead.

How do you test a salesperson in an interview?

Use a short selling exercise built around your own product or a familiar one. Watch how the candidate asks questions, listens and handles an objection, then give one piece of feedback and ask them to try again. How they respond shows their coachability. Managers design and rehearse this exercise during the workshop.

How do you check a sales candidate's past numbers?

Ask for specific targets, results and rankings, then probe the context: territory size, product, team support and how the target was set. Look for consistent answers across interviewers and references. Reference calls should ask for facts, such as how the person handled a missed quarter, rather than general praise.

How can sales managers avoid hiring people just like themselves?

Agree the profile and scorecard before meeting any candidate, score each interview separately before discussing, and include a second interviewer with a different background. Notice when 'good fit' really means 'reminds me of me'. The workshop includes a mock debrief where managers catch similarity bias in their own scoring.

Why do new sales hires fail early?

Common reasons include a profile that did not match the territory, a candidate who interviewed better than they sell, and weak onboarding that leaves the new seller without pipeline or support. The final module helps managers build a 90-day plan with early joint calls, small wins and clear checkpoints to catch problems quickly.

How long is the sales hiring workshop?

The recommended design is a half day in person or two live virtual sessions of two hours each, followed by a 90-day review of each manager's next hire. Bodhih has worked with 2,000+ companies since 2008 and adapts profiles and exercises to your products, channels and markets.

Should HR recruiters attend the sales hiring workshop with managers?

It helps. When talent acquisition partners and sales managers build the profile and scorecard together, screening improves and fewer unsuitable candidates reach the manager. Recruiters also learn what the selling exercise tests, so they can brief candidates properly. Many organisations run a joint session first, then a manager-only session on interviewing and onboarding the new seller.
