## Why sustainability has become a line manager's job

In India, customer questionnaires and supplier data requests now land on the desks of plant heads, category managers and finance controllers, not only the sustainability team. Exporters face overseas buyers asking for carbon data on every shipment. The targets exist; the difficult part is the Tuesday meeting where a cheaper option and a cleaner one collide.

Most managers were never taught to lead through that tension. They either defer every decision to a central team or overpromise to look committed. Sustainability [leadership training](https://bodhih.com/leadership-skills-training-in-india/) gives them a shared way to frame trade-offs, bring suppliers and teams along, and describe progress without greenwashing.

## Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day design moves sustainability out of the report and into the decisions line leaders make every week. Participants translate enterprise targets into unit commitments, argue real trade-offs with cost and impact data, and rehearse a supplier conversation that invites data rather than demanding it. Day two covers sponsoring a reduction project, winning over a sceptical team and checking claims for greenwashing. Each leader leaves sponsoring one real project with a 90-day review date.

75% hands-on practice · 13.5 contact hours · Cohort: 12–24 participants, ideally mixed across operations, procurement and finance · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: From targets to trade-offs

Participants can connect sustainability targets to their P&L, decide trade-offs openly and open a supplier conversation.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Where the pressure comes from (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Targets in your own numbers (Diagnostic)
3. 11:15–12:15 · The one-page business case (Concept burst)
4. 12:15–13:00 · Cheaper or cleaner? (Case clinic)
5. 13:45–14:45 · Defend it to the panel (Debate)
6. 14:45–15:30 · Segment your suppliers (Diagnostic)
7. 15:45–16:45 · The reluctant supplier (Role-play)
8. 16:45–17:30 · Day 1 commitments (Reflection)

### Day 2: Projects, people and honest communication

Participants can sponsor a reduction project, engage a sceptical team and communicate progress without overclaiming.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Greenwash or genuine? (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Pick a project worth sponsoring (Build sprint)
3. 11:15–12:15 · When savings are slow (Case clinic)
4. 12:15–13:00 · The sceptical shift team (Role-play)
5. 13:45–14:45 · Recognition and rituals (Group challenge)
6. 14:45–15:30 · The honest progress update (Skill drill)
7. 15:45–16:45 · Leadership panel (Presentation)
8. 16:45–17:30 · My 90-day plan (Action planning)

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30 each day), or 5 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 90-day sponsored project review. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is sustainability leadership training?

The recommended design is two full days in person, or five three-hour live virtual sessions, followed by a 90-day sponsored project review. A half-day version suits senior leadership teams who need to agree how sustainability trade-offs are decided and communicated.

### What activities are included in sustainability leadership training?

Leaders translate targets into unit commitments, argue a cheaper-or-cleaner supplier case in front of a mock leadership panel, rehearse a conversation with a reluctant supplier, scope a real reduction project, win over a sceptical shift team and rewrite vague claims into honest progress updates.

## How we deliver it

### Your targets, your cases

We build cases from your targets, supplier base and sites, so participants rehearse the decisions they will face next quarter.

### Decision labs

Small groups debate live trade-offs with realistic cost and impact data, then defend their choice to a panel playing the leadership team.

### Conversation rehearsal

Supplier, team and customer conversations are practised in role-plays with a facilitator and peer observers giving specific feedback.

### Project-based follow-through

Each leader leaves sponsoring one real project, reviewed with peers and their manager over 90 days.

## Tailored versions

### For manufacturing and export units

Focus on energy, material and logistics decisions, overseas buyer requests for carbon data, and engaging MSME suppliers across the cluster.

### For GCCs, IT and services firms

Emphasis on travel, cloud and facility footprints, client sustainability questionnaires and embedding goals in delivery teams.

### Senior leadership session

A half-day version for the leadership team to agree how trade-offs are decided and communicated before the wider manager rollout.

## How we measure impact

Evaluation starts before the workshop, in line with the ADDIE model Bodhih has used since 2008. Leaders complete a pre-assessment of decision-making, influencing and stakeholder skills on AssessAll and repeat it as a post-assessment. We track each sponsored project against the baseline it set, plus supplier conversations held and team engagement actions. A 30-60-90 day follow-up with the sustainability or strategy team closes the loop, and individual development plans carry the learning forward.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is sustainability leadership?

Sustainability leadership is the ability to turn environmental and social commitments into business decisions and team behaviour. It means building a credible case, making trade-offs openly, influencing suppliers and peers, and communicating honestly about progress. It sits with every manager who controls budgets, sites or suppliers, not only with a central sustainability function.

### How is this different from ESG reporting or carbon accounting courses?

Reporting and carbon accounting courses teach measurement frameworks and data collection. Our sustainability leadership training assumes those numbers exist and focuses on what leaders do with them: deciding, influencing, sponsoring projects and engaging people. Specialist technical content can be added through your internal experts, but the program itself is about leadership behaviour.

### How do managers turn ESG goals into action?

Start by translating the enterprise target into two or three commitments your own unit controls, with an owner and a date. Then pick one visible project, build a cross-functional team and review it monthly. The program walks participants through this translation using their own targets, so they leave with commitments rather than slogans.

### How do you engage suppliers on sustainability?

Segment suppliers by how much they matter and how ready they are. Open with curiosity, ask what data they already hold, and offer support before setting demands. Smaller suppliers often need templates and time. Participants practise this conversation in role-plays with a reluctant supplier owner and leave with a plan for their three most important suppliers.

### How do leaders avoid greenwashing?

Make claims specific, evidenced and proportionate, and talk about gaps as openly as wins. Avoid vague words such as green or eco-friendly without data behind them. The program includes a claim-checking exercise and practice in writing a modest, accurate progress update for customers, employees and leadership.

### Who should attend sustainability leadership training?

It suits leaders who control budgets, operations or suppliers: business-unit heads, plant and facility leaders, procurement, finance and HR heads. Sustainability specialists benefit as co-participants because they learn how line leaders think. We recommend mixed cohorts so procurement, operations and finance solve the same trade-offs together.

### How long is the program and can it run virtually?

Our recommended design is two days in person or five three-hour [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions, followed by a 90-day project review. A half-day version suits senior teams. Bodhih delivers in person across India, the Middle East and other regions through travelling master trainers, or live virtually for distributed leadership groups.

### What skills does a sustainability leader need?

A sustainability leader needs commercial judgement to link targets to cost and revenue, clear decision-making when trade-offs bite, and influence with suppliers and peers they do not manage. They also need project sponsorship skills and honest communication. Our sustainability leadership training builds each skill through decision labs, supplier role-plays and one real project that every leader sponsors for 90 days after the workshop.
