The business plan says 30 per cent growth and two new markets. The headcount plan says last year plus ten per cent. Our strategic workforce planning training helps HR leaders, HRBPs and finance partners close that gap with a practical, spreadsheet-level plan that leaders will understand and fund.

## Why workforce planning has moved from headcount to skills

For years, workforce planning in many organisations meant an annual headcount number negotiated between HR and finance. That no longer works when AI is reshaping roles, [GCCs](https://bodhih.com/gcc-leadership-development-program/) are adding capabilities quarter by quarter and the skills a business needs in two years may not exist in its teams today.

Leaders now ask harder questions: which roles will shrink, which will expand, and should we hire, train, bring in partners or move people? Strategic workforce planning training gives HR and finance a shared, simple method to answer them with numbers, scenarios and clear options instead of guesswork.

## Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design

This one-day workshop takes HR and finance partners through a complete workforce plan for a case company, then has them apply each step to one role family from their own organisation. Participants pull workforce drivers from a business plan, build a supply map, model three demand scenarios in a simple spreadsheet, choose build, buy, borrow or redeploy options, estimate AI's effect on roles and present a one-page plan to a panel playing the CEO and CFO.

75% hands-on practice · 6.8 contact hours · Cohort: 12–24 participants, ideally mixed HR and finance · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: From business plan to fundable workforce plan

Participants can build a scenario-based workforce plan for one role family and present it to leadership.

1. 09:30–10:15 · Last year plus ten per cent (Energiser)
2. 10:15–11:15 · Drivers and critical roles (Case clinic)
3. 11:30–12:30 · Mapping supply (Hands-on lab)
4. 12:30–13:30 · Three demand scenarios (Hands-on lab)
5. 14:15–15:15 · Build, buy, borrow or redeploy (Group challenge)
6. 15:15–15:45 · Where AI changes the work (Concept burst)
7. 16:00–17:00 · The CEO and CFO panel (Presentation)
8. 17:00–17:30 · My 90-day plan (Action planning)

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 2 × 3.5-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 90-day plan-building follow-up. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is strategic workforce planning training?

The recommended design is one full day in person or two live virtual sessions of three and a half hours, followed by a 90-day period in which participants build a real plan for one role family, with check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days.

### What activities are included in strategic workforce planning training?

Participants pull workforce drivers from a business plan, map supply and model three demand scenarios in a spreadsheet, close a gap using build, buy, borrow and redeploy option cards, analyse AI's effect on tasks and present a one-page plan to a CEO and CFO panel.

## How we deliver it

### Spreadsheet-level practice

Participants build a working supply, demand and gap model in a simple spreadsheet, so the method can be used the next week without new systems.

### HR and finance together

Mixed tables of HR and finance participants build shared assumptions, which is often the hardest part of real workforce planning.

### Case company plus your own data

A realistic case company carries the day, and participants apply each step to one role family from their own organisation.

### Leadership presentation

The day ends with a short plan presentation to a panel playing a CEO and CFO, with structured feedback.

## Tailored versions

### For GCCs and IT services

Cases cover capability build-outs, bench and utilisation, campus pipelines and the effect of AI on engineering and operations roles.

### For manufacturing and retail networks

Cases cover seasonal demand, new sites and stores, frontline skills and automation in plants and warehouses.

### Two-day workforce planning sprint

An extended version where HR and finance teams build the real workforce plan for two or three critical role families with facilitator support.

## How we measure impact

Evaluation follows the ADDIE model. Participants complete two AssessAll assessments before the workshop and again at day 90: Strategic Workforce & Talent Planning, and People & Performance Data Judgment. Reporting managers hold check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days, and we review the workforce plan each participant builds for one role family, including its scenarios, sourcing choices and leadership response, as part of the strategic workforce planning training follow-up.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is strategic workforce planning?

Strategic workforce planning is the process of matching the roles, skills and capacity an organisation will need to deliver its business plan with the workforce it has and can realistically build. It looks two to three years ahead, uses scenarios rather than a single number and leads to choices about hiring, developing, borrowing or redeploying talent.

### What is strategic workforce planning training?

It is a practical workshop that teaches HR and finance partners how to build a workforce plan. Participants link the business plan to roles and skills, map supply, forecast demand in scenarios, choose sourcing options, factor in AI and present a fundable plan. Bodhih's version uses spreadsheet-level tools and the participants' own role families.

### How do you forecast workforce demand?

Identify the business drivers that create work, such as volume, customers, products or sites, then estimate how many people and which skills each driver needs, adjusted for productivity changes like automation. Build conservative, expected and ambitious scenarios. Compare demand with projected supply to see the gap. The workshop practises this step by step.

### What is the difference between workforce planning and succession planning?

[Succession planning](https://bodhih.com/succession-planning-training/) focuses on a small number of critical leadership roles and who could step into them. Strategic workforce planning covers the whole workforce or key role families, asking how many people with which skills the business will need and how to source them. The two connect, but they answer different questions.

### How does AI change workforce planning?

AI changes the tasks inside roles, so planning by job title becomes less reliable. Planners now estimate which tasks AI will take over or speed up, which roles will shrink or expand and what reskilling is needed. Skills-based planning, with redeployment as a first option, helps organisations adapt without avoidable hiring and exits.

### Who should own workforce planning, HR or finance?

Both, with business leaders. HR usually leads the method and skills view, finance owns cost and headcount budgets, and business heads own the demand assumptions. Plans fail when one function builds them alone. That is why the workshop seats HR and finance partners together and closes with a joint presentation.

### How long is the strategic workforce planning workshop?

The recommended design is one day in person or two [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions of three and a half hours, followed by a 90-day period in which participants build a real plan for one role family. Bodhih can extend it into a two-day sprint for HR and finance teams building the actual annual plan.
