## Why strategic thinking is now a manager's job

Markets, technology and regulation now shift faster than annual planning cycles. Organisations can no longer rely on a few senior leaders to spot every threat and opportunity.

Managers closest to customers and operations often see change first. Strategic thinking training helps them turn those signals into sharp questions, smart options and clear recommendations for leadership.

## What participants will be able to do

### Zoom out on purpose

Separate strategic questions from operational ones and protect time for thinking ahead.

### Scan the environment

Use PESTLE and industry forces analysis to identify the shifts most likely to affect their business.

### Frame problems sharply

Break complex challenges into MECE issue trees and testable hypotheses.

### Plan for uncertainty

Build two-by-two scenarios and define early signals to watch for each.

### Make clear choices

Apply the 'where to play, how to win' cascade to decide what their team will and will not do.

### Sell the strategy

Present a recommendation with rationale, risks and trade-offs in a one-page strategy note.

## Who should attend

- Mid-level managers moving into senior roles
- Functional heads in sales, operations, HR, finance and technology
- Technical managers who want to contribute to business strategy
- High-potential leaders in [leadership development](https://bodhih.com/leadership-skills-training-in-india/) pipelines
- Leadership teams preparing annual or three-year plans
- Founders and managers in fast-growing startups

## Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day workshop helps managers step out of firefighting and think ahead. Each participant brings one live business challenge. They audit how their week splits between operational and strategic work, scan their industry for the shifts that matter, and break their challenge into an issue tree with testable hypotheses. They build scenarios around two critical uncertainties, ask 'and then what?' for second-order effects, and make explicit trade-offs. The capstone is a one-page strategy note pitched to a leadership panel.

78% hands-on practice · 13.5 contact hours · Cohort: 12–24 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: See wider, frame sharper

Participants can read the bigger picture for their business and frame their live challenge as a structured problem.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Balcony and dance floor (Energiser)
2. 10:00–10:45 · Traps of the busy manager (Diagnostic)
3. 11:00–12:15 · Industry scan (Group challenge)
4. 12:15–13:00 · Frontline signals (Gallery walk)
5. 13:45–14:30 · Frame the real problem (Skill drill)
6. 14:30–15:30 · Issue tree and hypotheses (Hands-on lab)
7. 15:45–16:45 · Tree swap (Peer coaching)
8. 16:45–17:30 · Balcony notes (Reflection)

### Day 2: Think ahead, choose, act

Participants can plan for uncertainty, make strategic trade-offs and pitch a recommendation.

1. 09:30–10:00 · And then what? (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Scenarios around two uncertainties (Hands-on lab)
3. 11:15–12:00 · Pre-mortem (Peer coaching)
4. 12:00–13:00 · Where to play, how to win (Case clinic)
5. 13:45–14:30 · Trade-off matrix (Build sprint)
6. 14:30–15:15 · The one-page strategy note (Build sprint)
7. 15:30–16:45 · Leadership panel (Presentation)
8. 16:45–17:30 · My 60-day strategic plan (Action planning)

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30), or 4 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 60-day strategy note assignment. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is strategic thinking training?

The recommended design is two days in person, 09:30 to 17:30, followed by a 60-day assignment on a live business challenge. It also runs as four live virtual sessions of three hours each. Leadership teams can run it as a facilitated strategy offsite instead.

### What activities are included in strategic thinking training?

Managers audit their own calendar for strategic time, build an industry scan wall, break a live challenge into an issue tree, draw four scenarios with 2029 headlines, run a pre-mortem, and pitch a one-page strategy note to a leadership panel that funds, refines or parks it.

## How we deliver it

### Your business as the case

Participants bring a real strategic question from their team, and each framework is applied to it through the program.

### Business simulations

Short simulations recreate market changes so participants practise making choices under uncertainty.

### Peer challenge

Small groups critique each other's thinking, which strengthens reasoning and exposes blind spots.

### Leader panel

Where possible, senior leaders review final recommendations and share how they think about strategy in your organisation.

## Tailored versions

### For leadership teams

A facilitated strategy offsite where the team uses the tools to shape its own plan, rather than a classroom program.

### For technical and GCC managers

Focus on linking technology choices to business outcomes and contributing to global strategy discussions.

### For operations and manufacturing

Cases on supply chain risk, capacity, cost and customer demand shifts in plant and operations settings.

## How we measure impact

Using the ADDIE Evaluate stage, participants complete a pre and post assessment of strategic and [critical thinking](https://bodhih.com/critical-thinking-training/) on AssessAll. Their one-page strategy notes are reviewed against a rubric for insight, clarity and feasibility. Managers hold 30, 60 and 90 day check-ins to see whether participants are framing problems better and contributing to planning discussions. With client agreement, we track which recommendations were adopted or piloted.

## Frequently asked questions

### How can managers develop strategic thinking?

Managers develop strategic thinking by regularly stepping back from operations, asking broader questions, and practising structured tools such as environmental scans, issue trees and scenarios. Exposure to business context, feedback from senior leaders and real strategic assignments help too. Strategic thinking training accelerates this by giving tools and plenty of guided practice on real problems.

### What is the difference between strategic and operational thinking?

Operational thinking focuses on doing things right: running processes, meeting targets and solving today's problems. Strategic thinking focuses on doing the right things: understanding where the market is going, choosing where to compete and deciding what to stop. Good managers need both, and the program helps them switch between the two deliberately.

### What are examples of strategic thinking tools?

Common tools include PESTLE analysis, industry forces analysis, SWOT, issue trees, scenario planning, the Three Horizons model, pre-mortems and a cascade of strategic choices. Tools are only useful when applied to real questions, so the program uses them on each participant's own business challenge rather than on textbook cases.

### Can strategic thinking be taught?

Yes. Strategic thinking is a set of habits and skills, not a fixed trait. Asking better questions, spotting patterns, thinking in scenarios and weighing trade-offs can all be practised. Managers improve fastest when they combine structured tools with feedback and real opportunities to contribute to strategy.

### How do I show strategic thinking at work?

Connect your team's work to business goals, raise emerging risks and opportunities early, and bring options with trade-offs rather than only problems. Write short, structured recommendations. Ask 'what happens next?' before decisions. Over time, these behaviours signal that you think beyond your immediate role.

### How is this different from Bodhih's strategic leadership program?

Strategic thinking training builds the individual thinking skills of analysing, framing and choosing. Our [strategic leadership](https://bodhih.com/strategic-leadership/) program focuses more on setting direction, aligning people and leading execution at a senior level. Many clients run strategic thinking for mid-level managers first, and strategic leadership for senior leaders.

### Who should attend strategic thinking training?

It suits mid-level and senior managers, functional heads and [high-potential](https://bodhih.com/high-potential-leadership-program/) leaders who are expected to shape plans, not just deliver them. It is also valuable for technical managers in IT and GCCs who want a stronger voice in business decisions. We usually recommend cohorts of 15 to 20 so everyone gets feedback on their own case.
