Teams make better decisions when people feel safe to ask questions, admit mistakes and challenge the boss. This psychological safety training shows leaders how to build that climate deliberately, while keeping standards and accountability high.

## Why psychological safety matters more than ever

Hybrid work, AI adoption and constant change mean teams must learn fast and flag problems early. When people stay silent, errors go unreported, ideas are lost and risks grow quietly.

In hierarchical cultures, including many Indian organisations, speaking up to a senior person can feel risky. Psychological safety training gives leaders specific behaviours to invite candour without lowering the bar on performance.

> CCL research with nearly 300 leaders found 62% of senior teams showed significant variability in their team's psychological safety.

## What participants will be able to do

### Understand the concept clearly

Explain psychological safety accurately and why it is not the same as being nice or avoiding conflict.

### Diagnose their team

Assess their team's climate using a short survey and observable signals such as silence in meetings.

### Invite candour

Use humble inquiry and framing to make it easier for people to raise concerns and dissent.

### Respond productively

React to bad news, mistakes and challenge in ways that encourage more speaking up, not less.

### Balance safety and accountability

Keep high standards while creating safety, using the learning-zone model.

### Build team rituals

Introduce practices such as check-ins, pre-mortems and blameless reviews into regular team routines.

## Who should attend

- People managers of teams of any size
- Senior leaders and leadership teams
- Engineering and product leaders running incident reviews
- Leaders in safety-critical settings such as manufacturing, pharma and healthcare
- HR business partners supporting culture change
- Managers of diverse, hybrid or [cross-cultural](https://bodhih.com/cross-cultural-sensitization/) teams

## Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design

This one-day workshop gives leaders specific behaviours that make it easier for people to speak up, without lowering the bar on performance. Participants diagnose their own team's climate, practise inviting dissent from a quiet team member, and rehearse responding to bad news so the messenger comes back next time. They run a blameless review on a real incident and design meeting rituals such as pre-mortems and round-robins. Each leader leaves with a 30-day experiment to run with their own team.

78% hands-on practice · 6.8 contact hours · Cohort: 12–24 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: Making it safe to speak, and keeping the bar high

Participants can diagnose their team's climate, invite and respond to candour, and leave with a 30-day team experiment.

1. 09:30–10:00 · The moment I stayed quiet (Energiser)
2. 10:00–10:45 · Safety is not softness (Concept burst)
3. 11:00–12:00 · Reading my team (Diagnostic)
4. 12:00–13:00 · Inviting the quiet voice (Role-play)
5. 13:45–14:30 · Shooting the messenger (Skill drill)
6. 14:30–15:30 · Blameless review (Case clinic)
7. 15:45–16:40 · Leadership team meeting under a microscope (Fishbowl)
8. 16:40–17:30 · My 30-day team experiment (Action planning)

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 3 × 2.5-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 30-day team experiment and follow-up. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is psychological safety training?

The recommended design is one day in person, 09:30 to 17:30, followed by a 30-day team experiment and a follow-up. It also runs as three live virtual sessions of two and a half hours each. Leadership teams can add a facilitated session on their own climate.

### What activities are included in psychological safety training?

Leaders read their own team's climate pulse, practise drawing out a quiet team member's hidden concern, drill first responses to bad news, run a blameless review of a pharma labelling error, and observe a leadership meeting fishbowl before and after adding speaking-up rituals.

## How we deliver it

### Evidence-based content

The program draws on established research by Amy Edmondson and Timothy Clark, translated into practical leader behaviours.

### Honest reflection

Leaders reflect on their own reactions to challenge and mistakes, often discovering unintended signals they send.

### Realistic practice

Role-plays cover delicate moments such as a junior employee raising a safety issue or a peer disagreeing publicly.

### Team application

Leaders run a short experiment with their team between sessions and share results with their cohort.

## Tailored versions

### For leadership teams

A facilitated session where the top team examines its own climate, conflict patterns and decision-making habits.

### For engineering and product teams

Focus on blameless post-mortems, code review culture and raising risks early in sprints.

### For plants and safety-critical operations

Emphasis on stop-work authority, near-miss reporting and speaking up across shifts and hierarchy levels.

## How we measure impact

Following the ADDIE Evaluate stage, we run a short team psychological safety survey before the program and repeat it after 90 days. Leaders complete a pre and post self-assessment, and can gather a 360° pulse through AssessAll. Managers and HR review 30, 60 and 90 day check-ins on team experiments. Where available, we also look at indicators such as incident reporting, engagement survey items on voice and idea volume.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is psychological safety at work?

Psychological safety is a shared belief within a team that it is safe to take interpersonal risks, such as asking questions, admitting mistakes, raising concerns or disagreeing with a senior person. The term was developed by Harvard professor Amy Edmondson. It is a team climate that leaders shape through their daily behaviour.

### How do leaders create psychological safety?

Leaders build it by framing work as a learning challenge, inviting input with genuine questions, admitting their own uncertainty and responding well when people bring bad news. Consistency matters: one harsh reaction can undo months of progress. Team practices such as structured meetings and blameless reviews help make safety a habit.

### What are the four stages of psychological safety?

Timothy Clark describes four stages. Inclusion safety means feeling accepted. Learner safety means feeling safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Contributor safety means feeling safe to offer ideas. Challenger safety means feeling safe to question the status quo. Our program helps leaders diagnose and strengthen each stage in their team.

### How do you measure psychological safety in a team?

The most common method is a short, anonymous team survey with statements such as 'it is safe to take a risk on this team'. You can also observe signals like who speaks in meetings, how mistakes are reported and whether people challenge senior views. We use both approaches before and after the program.

### Does psychological safety mean avoiding conflict?

No. Psychologically safe teams often have more open disagreement, because people feel able to challenge ideas. The difference is that conflict focuses on the work, not on people. Psychological safety also does not mean lower standards. The best teams combine high safety with high accountability.

### Is psychological safety relevant in hierarchical Indian workplaces?

Very much so. In cultures with high respect for hierarchy, people may hesitate to question seniors even when they see a risk. Leaders need to invite challenge more explicitly and reward it visibly. The program includes practical techniques that work within Indian and cross-cultural team contexts.

### How is this different from employee wellbeing training?

[Wellbeing](https://bodhih.com/employee-wellbeing-training/) programs focus on individual health, stress and balance. Psychological safety training focuses on team climate and leader behaviour, specifically whether people feel safe to speak up and take interpersonal risks. The two complement each other, and we often recommend them together.
