## Why slide design matters more when decks travel alone

Many decks are never presented. They are emailed to a client, posted in a channel or read on a phone five minutes before a steering committee. If the slides cannot stand on their own, the message dies in the inbox, however strong the analysis behind it.

AI tools now generate decks in seconds, which means more slides, more decoration and less thinking. Presentation design training brings the thinking back: what is the one point, what evidence supports it and how can it be seen instantly by every reader.

## What participants will be able to do

### Storyboard before building

Sketch the whole storyline on paper so the deck has a clear flow before a single slide is opened.

### Write action titles

Turn topic labels into full-sentence titles that state the takeaway, so skimming the titles tells the whole story.

### Create visual hierarchy

Use layout, size, contrast and white space to guide the eye to what matters first.

### Design charts with a point

Select, simplify and annotate charts so each one proves the claim in its title.

### Stay on brand, consistently

Use master layouts, grids and templates so decks look like one organisation, whoever builds them.

### Design for every reader

Apply contrast, font size, alt text and reading-order checks so decks work for people with visual impairments.

## Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design

This one-day studio turns each participant's own deck into a clear, read-alone story. Participants storyboard on sticky notes before touching software, rewrite topic labels as action titles and split crowded slides. They rebuild layouts on a grid, repair charts so each proves one point and run an accessibility check. A short lab shows where AI design tools help and where they mislead. The day closes with a gallery walk of before-and-after decks and a makeover clinic date.

80% hands-on practice · 6.8 contact hours · Cohort: 10–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: From clutter to clear story

Participants can storyboard, title, lay out and chart a deck so it communicates at a glance and works for every reader.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Ten-second slide test (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Sticky-note storyboard (Build sprint)
3. 11:15–12:15 · Action titles and one message (Skill drill)
4. 12:15–13:00 · Grid, hierarchy and white space (Demo & practice)
5. 13:45–14:45 · Chart makeover clinic (Case clinic)
6. 14:45–15:30 · Accessibility and the read-alone deck (Hands-on lab)
7. 15:45–16:30 · AI design tools: help or hazard? (Hands-on lab)
8. 16:30–17:30 · Before-and-after gallery walk (Gallery walk)

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 3 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a deck makeover clinic two to three weeks later. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is presentation design training?

The recommended design is one full day in person, or three live virtual sessions of three hours, followed by a makeover clinic two to three weeks later. Teams that also want delivery coaching can add a second day to present the redesigned decks.

### What activities are included in presentation design training?

Participants take a ten-second slide test, storyboard their deck on sticky notes, rewrite titles as takeaways, rebuild slides on a grid, repair charts, run an accessibility and phone-screen check, test AI layout tools against their data and brand, and finish with a before-and-after gallery walk.

## How we deliver it

### Makeovers on your decks

Participants bring a recent deck, and each module ends with them redesigning slides from it, so improvement is visible by lunch.

### Gallery walks

Before-and-after slides are displayed around the room or on a shared board for peer critique against a simple design checklist.

### Tool-agnostic principles

The principles apply in whichever presentation software your organisation uses, with short demos adapted to your environment.

### Customised through ADDIE

We analyse sample decks and your brand template before the workshop and build the exercises around your real formats and pain points.

## Tailored versions

### For consulting and strategy teams

Focuses on storyline logic, action titles, dense data slides and steering-committee decks that must read clearly without a presenter.

### For marketing and sales enablement

Covers customer-facing decks, brand consistency, visual [storytelling](https://bodhih.com/storytelling-for-business/) and adapting a master deck for different audiences.

### Pair with delivery skills

Combine a design day with a delivery workshop so participants build and then present the same deck with coaching.

## How we measure impact

Each participant submits a deck before the workshop and a redesigned deck afterwards, and both are scored against a rubric covering storyline, titles, hierarchy, charts and accessibility. Participants also take a pre and post assessment of presentation and [communication skills](https://bodhih.com/communication-skills-training/) on AssessAll. A 30-60-90 day follow-up gathers stakeholder feedback on deck quality and review cycles, and we report results to your L&D team as part of the ADDIE evaluation stage.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is presentation design training?

Presentation design training teaches people to build slide decks that communicate clearly. It covers storyboarding, action titles, one message per slide, layout and visual hierarchy, chart design, templates, accessibility and responsible use of AI tools. It focuses on designing the slides themselves rather than on speaking or delivery skills.

### How many words should be on a slide?

There is no fixed number, because it depends on whether the deck will be presented or read alone. Presented slides should carry few words and let the speaker explain. Read-alone slides can carry more, but still need one clear message, a takeaway title and plenty of white space. The workshop teaches participants to design for both.

### What is an action title on a slide?

An action title is a full-sentence heading on a slide that states its takeaway, such as 'Returns fell 12% after the new packaging', rather than a label like 'Returns'. When every slide has an action title, readers can understand the whole storyline just by reading the titles in sequence.

### How do you make slides accessible?

Use strong colour contrast, large readable fonts and palettes that work for colour-blind readers. Never rely on colour alone to convey meaning. Add alt text to images and charts, keep a logical reading order and use built-in layouts so screen readers can navigate. Participants run an accessibility check on their own deck in the workshop.

### How do you design a chart for a presentation?

Decide the one point the chart must prove, choose the chart type that shows that comparison, then remove anything that does not help. Highlight the key bar or line in a contrasting colour and state the insight in the title. The chart module includes a makeover of participants' own charts.

### Can AI tools design my slides for me?

AI tools can suggest layouts, generate first drafts and speed up formatting. They cannot decide what your audience needs to hear, and they can produce inaccurate charts, off-brand visuals or confidential leaks. Our training shows teams how to use approved AI tools for speed while keeping human judgement on story, data and brand.

### How is this different from presentation skills training?

[Presentation skills](https://bodhih.com/advanced-presentation-skills/) training focuses on delivery: voice, body language, handling questions and managing nerves. Presentation design training focuses on building the deck: structure, titles, visuals, charts and accessibility. Many organisations combine them, and we can run a design day followed by a delivery workshop on the same decks.

### Do you offer presentation design training online?

Yes. The [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) version runs as three three-hour sessions with shared screens and breakout makeover clinics. In-person workshops run at client offices across India and in other regions, with Bodhih's master trainers travelling from Bengaluru. Both formats use participants' real decks and templates.
