## Why plant leadership decides more than the machines do

Two plants with the same lines and the same product can deliver very different results. The difference usually sits in the plant manager's operating rhythm: how the morning review runs, whether department heads solve problems or escalate them, and whether the night shift hears the same priorities as the day shift.

Most plant heads rose through production, maintenance or quality and learnt leadership on the job. Plant manager training gives them a deliberate way to lead managers, handle a mixed permanent and temporary workforce and keep improvement going when the month-end dispatch pressure arrives.

## What participants will be able to do

### Run a tight daily review

Chair a 30-minute production review that looks at yesterday's misses, today's risks and owners, not a recital of numbers.

### Lead through managers

Set clear expectations for shift, maintenance, quality and stores heads, and stop solving problems that belong to them.

### Trade off in the open

Make output, quality, cost and delivery trade-offs explicit so department heads understand the call and the reasoning.

### Make the floor visible

Choose a handful of shop-floor measures and display them so operators, supervisors and managers read the same story.

### Improve, not fire-fight

Protect time and people for root-cause [problem solving](https://bodhih.com/problem-solving-and-decision-making/) even in high-dispatch weeks, and track whether fixes hold.

### Speak for the plant

Present plant performance and needs to the business with clear asks, honest risks and options.

## Who should attend

## Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day design rebuilds the plant manager's operating rhythm around their own site. Day one starts with the morning production review: participants redesign their agenda, chair it under pressure with role-played department heads and link it to shift huddles. Day two moves to people and trade-offs: a month-end dispatch dilemma, a resistant maintenance head, a question-led floor walk, the night shift and a presentation to the business. Each plant head leaves with a reset review format and a 90-day plant plan.

75% hands-on practice · 13.5 contact hours · Cohort: 10–18 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: The operating rhythm

Participants can run a daily review that drives ownership, set expectations for department heads and connect the review to every shift.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Who called whom at 6 am (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Autopsy of our morning review (Diagnostic)
3. 11:15–12:15 · Rebuild the 30-minute review (Build sprint)
4. 12:15–13:15 · The 9 am review, live (Simulation)
5. 14:00–15:00 · Who decides what (Skill drill)
6. 15:15–16:15 · The resistant department head (Role-play)
7. 16:15–17:30 · Same plant, every shift (Case clinic)

### Day 2: Trade-offs, improvement and the business

Participants can make trade-offs openly, lead improvement without fire-fighting and represent the plant to the business.

1. 09:30–10:00 · What the board says (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · The month-end dispatch (Business game)
3. 11:15–12:15 · Five measures that tell the truth (Build sprint)
4. 12:15–13:00 · Floor walk with questions (Demo & practice)
5. 13:45–14:45 · Protecting improvement time (Case clinic)
6. 14:45–15:45 · The plant in the business review (Presentation)
7. 16:00–16:45 · Growing my successor (Peer coaching)
8. 16:45–17:30 · My 90-day plant plan (Action planning)

Recommended: 2 days in person at or near the plant (09:30–17:30 each day), or 5 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 90-day follow-up with reporting manager check-ins. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is plant manager training?

The recommended design is two full days in person at or near the plant, or five live virtual sessions of three hours, followed by a 90-day follow-up with reporting manager check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days.

### What activities are included in plant manager training?

Plant heads redesign and chair a simulated morning production review, draft decision rights for department heads, hold an accountability conversation, play a month-end dispatch business game, design a measure board, practise a question-led floor walk and present the plant in a business review.

## How we deliver it

### Run on your own plant data

Participants bring their daily report, biggest losses and organisation chart, so every review agenda and measure board is built for their real site.

### Factory-floor simulations

Timed production-review simulations with role cards for maintenance, quality, stores and planning heads recreate the morning pressure.

### Shop-floor practice where possible

In-plant deliveries include a guided walk where plant heads practise question-led observation and debrief what they saw.

### Peer exchange across industries

Plant heads from different sectors challenge each other's assumptions, which surfaces fresh ideas a single industry would miss.

## Tailored versions

### For automotive and engineering plants

Cases use line balancing, customer schedule changes, tool changeovers and supplier delays that hit a component plant serving OEMs.

### For FMCG and process plants

Focuses on batch and continuous operations, seasonal demand swings, changeover losses and coordinating large temporary workforces.

### New plant head onboarding

A 100-day blended journey for a plant head taking over a new site, with structured listening, a first-month review and a reset of the operating rhythm.

## How we measure impact

Results are tracked in the Evaluate stage of ADDIE. Plant heads complete an AssessAll pre-assessment, including the Manager of Managers Readiness Assessment and Lean & Continuous Improvement Judgment, and repeat it as the post-assessment at day 90. A 30-60-90 day follow-up with each participant's reporting manager reviews the new daily review format, department-head ownership of escalations and one plant measure the participant chose, such as schedule adherence or first-pass yield.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is plant manager training?

Plant manager training is a leadership program for the person accountable for a whole manufacturing site. It focuses on operating rhythm, leading department heads, balancing output, quality, cost and delivery, using shop-floor data and representing the plant to the business. Technical processes stay with your engineering teams; the program builds leadership.

### What skills does a plant manager need?

Beyond production knowledge, a plant manager needs to run a steady review rhythm, lead other managers, make trade-off decisions visibly, read data quickly, build improvement habits and communicate upward. Many also need to lead a mixed permanent and temporary workforce. The program builds each of these through practice on the participant's own plant.

### How can a plant manager stop constant fire-fighting?

Start by separating today's recovery from tomorrow's fix. Give each recurring problem an owner and a root-cause slot in the week, protect that slot in dispatch-heavy weeks and review whether fixes held. Fire-fighting shrinks when department heads, not the plant manager, own the recurring problems.

### What is the difference between a production manager and a plant manager?

A production manager usually runs manufacturing output on the lines. A plant manager leads the whole site, including production, maintenance, quality, stores, planning and plant HR, and represents the site to the business. The jump is from leading supervisors to leading managers, and from one goal to balancing several.

### How long is the plant manager training program?

The recommended design is two days in person at or near the plant, or five three-hour [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions, with a 90-day follow-up. A new plant head can follow a longer 100-day journey. The design is customised after a short needs analysis with operations leadership.

### How do plant managers run a daily production meeting?

Keep it short, standing and the same every day. Review yesterday's misses against plan, today's risks by line, and open actions with named owners, then push detail into follow-up huddles. The plant manager asks questions rather than giving answers. Participants rebuild their own morning agenda and run it in a timed simulation.

### Where do you run plant manager training?

Bodhih runs plant manager training at client plants and nearby venues in Pune, Chennai, Gurugram and Manesar, Hosur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Master trainers travel from Bengaluru, including to plants in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and a live virtual version suits multi-site groups.

### Can it help a production head prepare to become a plant head?

Yes. Production heads on a succession list attend the same program and add a stretch assignment, such as running the daily review for a month or leading one cross-department improvement. Their reporting plant head then uses the 90-day follow-up and the post-assessment to judge readiness for the larger role.
