## Why communication needs live practice, not another video

Most teams now do their important talking on calls and in chat: the status update that wanders, the email that reads colder than intended, the meeting where the person on a weak connection never gets a word in. Self-paced videos explain good communication, but they rarely change what people do on the next call.

Online [communication skills training](https://bodhih.com/communication-skills-training/) works when it feels like real work. Short live sessions, small breakouts and recorded practice let people rehearse the exact moments they find hard, get specific feedback and try again, without anyone needing to travel or lose a full day away from their desk.

## What participants will be able to do

### Say the point first

Open updates, answers and requests with the main message so busy colleagues on a call grasp it within the first two sentences.

### Listen properly through a screen

Use summarising, clarifying questions and visible attention so remote colleagues feel heard even when cameras are off.

### Write emails and chats that land

Write short, well-structured messages with the right tone, a clear ask and a sensible subject line or thread opener.

### Speak up in virtual meetings

Find the moment to add a view, disagree politely or ask a question without waiting to be invited.

### Present with confidence on camera

Handle framing, voice, pace and screen-sharing so a five-minute update feels composed rather than rushed.

### Adapt across cultures and time zones

Adjust directness, pace and follow-up for colleagues in India, the Gulf and Asia-Pacific without relying on stereotypes.

## Who should attend

- Employees in distributed teams who coordinate work mainly through calls, email and chat
- Team leads and first-line managers running daily stand-ups and weekly reviews online
- GCC and IT services staff who brief onshore stakeholders across time zones
- Client-facing and account teams who handle customer calls from different cities
- Shared-services, operations and support teams spread across several Indian offices

- Cutting filler and long lead-ins that lose listeners online
- Checking understanding without sounding condescending

- Signals of attention when cameras are on and when they are off
- Summarising and clarifying questions that prevent rework
- Handling interruptions, lag and people talking over each other
- Pairs drill: listen, summarise, confirm

### **Email and chat writing that gets action**Module 3 · 2 hours

- Subject lines, first lines and one clear ask per message
- Tone that reads as friendly and firm, not cold or vague
- When to switch from chat to a call, and how to close a thread
- Rewriting real (anonymised) messages from participants' inboxes

### **Speaking up in virtual meetings**Module 4 · 90 min

- Using the hand-raise, chat and short verbal bridges to enter a discussion
- Disagreeing politely and offering an alternative
- Asking the question everyone else is wondering about
- Simulation: a weekly review where priorities collide

### **On-camera presence and short presentations**Module 5 · 2 hours

- Framing, light, voice and eye line with ordinary home or office equipment
- Screen-sharing without losing the audience
- Pacing a five-minute update with one visual
- Recorded practice with peer and facilitator feedback

### **Communicating across cultures and time zones**Module 6 · 90 min

- Direct and indirect styles, and how to check meaning rather than assume it
- Overlap hours, handovers and messages that work while the other side sleeps
- Courtesy, titles and tone for colleagues in the Gulf and Asia-Pacific
- Case clinic: a misread message between Chennai and Dubai

## Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This four-session live virtual design turns everyday calls, emails and chats into practice material. Participants record and replay a two-minute update, drill listening with lag and interruptions, rewrite messages from their own inboxes and rehearse speaking up in a review where priorities collide. The last session builds on-camera presence and cross-cultural habits for India, Gulf and Asia-Pacific colleagues. Between sessions, each person completes one real-work task and reports back, so the skills appear in daily work during the program itself.

75% hands-on practice · 11 contact hours · Cohort: 12–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

3. 11:30–12:15 · Message, reason, next step (Demo & practice)
4. 12:15–13:00 · Record and replay (Skill drill)

4. 12:15–13:00 · Disagree without heat (Role-play)

### Session 4 (live virtual): On camera and across cultures

Participants can present a composed five-minute on-camera update and adapt their communication for colleagues in other cultures and time zones.

2. 10:30–11:15 · Five minutes on camera (Presentation)
3. 11:30–12:15 · Chennai to Dubai, misread (Case clinic)
4. 12:15–13:00 · My 60-day communication plan (Action planning)

Recommended: 4 × 3-hour live virtual sessions (10:00–13:00 IST, which is 08:30–11:30 in Dubai and 12:30–15:30 in Singapore) over two to three weeks, with a practice task between sessions. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is online communication skills training?

The recommended design is four live virtual sessions of three hours each over two to three weeks, with a short practice task between sessions. It can also run as six two-hour sessions when teams have limited overlap hours across time zones.

### What happens in an online communication skills session?

Each session mixes short inputs with breakout practice: recording and replaying updates, listening drills with interruptions, rewriting real emails and chats, a meeting simulation where priorities collide and five-minute on-camera presentations with peer and facilitator feedback.

## How we deliver it

### Short live sessions, not marathons

Three-hour sessions with a break, frequent breakouts and a practice task between sessions keep attention high and let skills settle into real work.

### Recorded practice with feedback

Participants record short updates and messages, then review them with a checklist, a peer and a Bodhih facilitator, so feedback is specific to what they actually said.

### Accountability between sessions

Each participant completes a small real-work task, such as rewriting an email or opening a stand-up differently, and reports back at the next session.

### Manager reinforcement

Managers receive a one-page guide to the skills and three prompts to use in their own team calls, so online communication skills training continues after the last session.

## Tailored versions

### For GCC and IT services teams

Practice centres on status updates to onshore stakeholders, escalation emails, handovers across time zones and speaking up on calls with senior client leaders.

### For India, Gulf and Asia-Pacific teams

Sessions are timed for overlapping working hours, cases mix colleagues from Mumbai, Riyadh, Dubai and Singapore, and the [cross-cultural](https://bodhih.com/cross-cultural-sensitization/) module is extended.

### For managers of distributed teams

Adds running inclusive online meetings, giving feedback on camera and setting team norms for chat, email and response times.

## How we measure impact

Online communication skills training follows the Evaluate stage of the ADDIE model. Participants take an AssessAll pre-assessment and post-assessment using the Workplace Listening Assessment and the Business Email Tone and Etiquette Assessment. Managers hold short check-ins after sessions two and four, using a simple observation sheet for calls and messages. A 30-60-90 day follow-up compares before-and-after samples of each participant's updates and emails.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is online communication skills training?

Online communication skills training is a live, facilitator-led program delivered over video calls rather than in a classroom or as self-paced video. Bodhih's version covers clear speaking, listening, email and chat writing, speaking up in meetings, on-camera presence and cross-cultural communication, with breakouts, recorded practice and feedback from a facilitator in every session.

### Does online communication skills training work as well as classroom training?

It can, when it is live and practical. Small breakouts, recorded practice and tasks between sessions give people more repetitions than a single classroom day. Participants also practise in the medium they actually use at work, so the habits transfer directly to their next video call, email or chat thread.

### How long is the online communication program and how is it scheduled?

Our recommended design is four [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions of three hours each, spread over two to three weeks, with short practice tasks in between. Each session ends with a real-work task. The schedule and content are customised after a needs analysis with your managers.

### How do you keep people engaged in live virtual training?

We keep inputs short, move people into breakouts of three or four within the first fifteen minutes and use polls, chat responses and recorded drills throughout. Cameras on is encouraged, not forced. Every session ends with a real-work task, which participants report on at the start of the next one.

### Which communication skills can be taught online?

Almost all of them. Clarity, listening, structuring updates, writing emails and chat messages, speaking up in meetings, presenting on camera and adapting to other cultures all practise well online. Skills that depend on a physical room, such as large-stage presenting, suit our in-person communication skills training instead.

### Can the sessions run across India, Gulf and Asia-Pacific time zones?

Yes. We schedule sessions inside common overlap hours, for example late morning in India, which is early morning in Dubai and early afternoon in Singapore. Bodhih delivers live virtual programs across seven regions, so mixed cohorts are routine and breakouts can be grouped by time zone when needed.

### How is the impact of online communication skills training measured?

Participants complete an AssessAll pre-assessment before session one and a post-assessment after the program. Managers use a short observation sheet in team calls, and at 30, 60 and 90 days we compare samples of participants' updates and emails against their starting point, so you see behaviour change, not just attendance.

### How do managers reinforce what people learn online?

Managers get a one-page summary of the skills, three questions to ask in one-on-ones and a simple way to notice good practice in team calls. When a manager asks for the point first or praises a clear email, the habit sticks. An optional manager briefing explains how to do this in thirty minutes.
