## Why microlearning needs design, not just shorter videos

Employees have little uninterrupted time, and much of what they learn in a single workshop is forgotten within weeks. Short, spaced learning helps with both problems.

But chopping a long course into two-minute clips is not microlearning. Good microlearning starts with one clear performance need, one objective and a plan for how and when learners will meet it again. This microlearning design workshop teaches that discipline step by step.

## What participants will be able to do

### Know when microlearning fits

Decide when short learning is the right answer and when a problem needs deeper practice or coaching.

### Write single-objective assets

Scope each microlearning asset around one behaviour, one objective and one clear call to action.

### Design across formats

Build short videos, scenario questions, flashcards, infographics and job aids that suit the moment of need.

### Apply spaced repetition

Plan reinforcement schedules and retrieval practice that counter the forgetting curve after training.

### Deliver in the flow of work

Place learning inside the tools people already use, such as mobile apps, chat platforms and intranets.

### Measure short learning

Track engagement, retrieval accuracy and behaviour signals to show whether microlearning is working.

## Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design

This one-day workshop teaches designers to build short learning that people actually use. Participants bring an existing long course or deck and turn part of it into microlearning during the day. They decide when micro fits, scope assets around one behaviour, build a scenario question, a flashcard set and a job aid, plan a four-week spaced reinforcement campaign and decide how to measure it. By 17:30 each person has one finished asset, peer-reviewed against a quality checklist, and a campaign ready to launch.

80% hands-on practice · 6.8 contact hours · Cohort: 10–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: One behaviour, one asset, many returns

Participants can scope, build, schedule and measure a microlearning asset from their own content.

1. 09:30–09:50 · Two-minute lesson (Energiser)
2. 09:50–10:40 · Micro, macro or neither? (Concept burst)
3. 10:55–12:10 · Cut it down to one (Hands-on lab)
4. 12:10–13:00 · Format match (Group challenge)
5. 13:45–15:15 · Build lab (Build sprint)
6. 15:30–16:15 · Quality check swap (Feedback round)
7. 16:15–16:50 · Four-week campaign (Build sprint)
8. 16:50–17:30 · Launch commitment (Action planning)

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 2 × 3.5-hour live virtual sessions, plus a four-week reinforcement campaign participants design and launch. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is the microlearning design workshop?

The recommended design is one day in person, from 09:30 to 17:30, or two live virtual sessions of three and a half hours. Participants then launch a four-week reinforcement campaign. A two-day version adds short video production and library governance.

### What activities are included in the microlearning design workshop?

Participants scope five micro assets from a long course they bring, match formats to real moments of need, build one complete asset in a 90-minute lab, review each other's work on a phone against a quality checklist and plan a four-week spaced reinforcement campaign.

## How we deliver it

### Design from real content

Participants bring an existing course or deck and turn part of it into a microlearning sequence during the workshop.

### Learning science made practical

Spacing, retrieval practice and cognitive load are applied directly in labs, not just explained.

### Tool-flexible build

Labs use simple tools such as slides, phone video and common authoring software, so skills transfer to any platform.

### Customised with ADDIE

Bodhih tailors the workshop to your platforms, audiences and existing content through a short ADDIE-based scoping.

## Tailored versions

### For frontline and retail teams

Focuses on mobile-first, low-bandwidth assets and short shift-time learning for distributed staff.

### For sales and product training

Designs spaced product knowledge drills, objection-handling scenarios and pre-call job aids.

## How we measure impact

We measure the microlearning design workshop at several levels. A short pre and post assessment, which can run on AssessAll, checks understanding of spacing principles. Each participant's built asset is reviewed against a quality checklist. At 30, 60 and 90 days, manager and L&D check-ins track how many assets and reinforcement campaigns have gone live, and what engagement and retrieval data they are producing.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is microlearning?

Microlearning is short, focused learning built around a single objective, usually taking a few minutes to complete. It can be a short video, a scenario question, a flashcard set or a job aid. What makes it microlearning is the tight focus on one need, not the duration alone, and it works best as part of a wider [learning journey](https://bodhih.com/learning-journeys/).

### How long should a microlearning module be?

There is no fixed rule, but most microlearning assets take between two and seven minutes. The better test is whether the asset covers one objective completely. If it needs more time, it is probably two assets. If it is shorter but still useful, that is fine. The workshop teaches scoping rather than chasing a set length.

### When should you not use microlearning?

Microlearning is not a good fit for complex skills that need extended practice, feedback and reflection, such as leadership conversations or advanced technical troubleshooting. It also cannot fix culture or process problems. In those cases, microlearning works best as reinforcement around a deeper program, which the workshop shows you how to design.

### How does spaced repetition improve retention?

Spaced repetition brings learners back to key ideas at increasing intervals, asking them to recall information rather than simply reread it. Each successful recall strengthens memory and slows forgetting. In corporate training, this often means short questions or scenarios sent over several weeks after a session, which the workshop teaches you to plan and build.

### Do we need a special microlearning platform?

Not to get started. Many teams deliver microlearning through their LMS, email, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp or an intranet. Dedicated platforms help with automated spacing and analytics at scale. The workshop focuses on design principles that work on any platform, and helps you judge what features you really need.

### What will participants build during the microlearning design workshop?

Each participant leaves with at least one finished microlearning asset built from their own content, a scoping sheet for a short sequence of further assets and a four-week reinforcement plan. These are reviewed against a quality checklist during the session, so teams can launch a pilot with real learners soon after the workshop ends.

### Can this workshop be combined with other trainer programs?

Yes. Many organisations combine it with Bodhih's instructional designing, virtual trainer or [learning experience design](https://bodhih.com/learning-experience-design-course/) programs to build a complete design capability. It also works as a follow-on module after Train the Trainer, helping trainers reinforce their classroom sessions with short, spaced learning.
