Interactive learning invites trainees into the conversation instead of passive lectures. See how questioning and recaps make training sessions interactive.

Interactive learning is a hands-on, real-world way of sharing information in which participants join the conversation instead of passively listening to lectures. The basic tool is questioning: at the start of a session, at random points, after each part and at the end. Trainers also open sessions with a recap and test existing knowledge before a new topic.

Passive learning relies on listening to lectures or memorization of information. Today, sitting at a desk listening to a lecture and copying figures from a white board is not playing into the strengths of participants of training programs. But with interactive learning, students are invited to participate in the conversation.Interactive learning is a more hands-on, real-world process of sharing and transfer of information. The basic way of interacting with participants is through questioning. Asking questions and answering them at the beginning of the training session, at random times during the session, at the end of each part of the training session and collectively at the end of the training session boosts the interactivity of the program.

As a result, there is an expansion in the content coverage of the program as the points that have not been set by the trainer are addressed. Trainers solicit information from trainees by beginning a new session with a recap of the previous session and beginning a new topic by testing the participant’s knowledge on the topic.

## Quick answers

### How do trainers make a session interactive?

The basic method is questioning. Trainers ask and answer questions at the beginning of a session, at random times during it, at the end of each part and collectively at the end. They also start each new session with a recap of the previous one and test participants' knowledge before introducing a new topic.
