## Why industrial sales engineers need more than product knowledge

Most industrial sales engineers know their machines, drives or chemicals better than anyone in the customer's plant. Yet deals stall because the buying group has grown: production, maintenance, quality, procurement and finance all want a say, and each measures value differently.

Buyers range from global OEMs to mid-sized plants in clusters such as Pune, Coimbatore, Rajkot and Ludhiana, and many now research online before calling a supplier. Industrial [sales training](https://bodhih.com/professional-sales-skills-training-in-india/) helps sales engineers lead with the customer's application and economics, so technical strength turns into orders.

## What participants will be able to do

### Discover on the shop floor

Run a plant visit that uncovers the application, the pain, the cost of downtime and who really decides.

### Sell the application, not the catalogue

Link product features to the customer's process, output and maintenance burden in their own numbers.

### Shape the specification early

Engage design and project teams before the enquiry so the requirement reflects what your solution does well.

### Map and win the buying group

Identify the plant head, maintenance, production, procurement and finance roles, and tailor the case for each.

### Build a cost-of-ownership case

Compare lifetime cost, including energy, downtime, spares and service, so price is judged in context.

### Grow the installed base

Plan spares, service and upgrade conversations that keep revenue flowing long after the machine is commissioned.

## Who should attend

## Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day design turns technical strength into orders. Sales engineers map the buying group on a live deal, rehearse shop-floor discovery with a busy production manager and practise getting specified early on a new line. Day two builds a cost-of-ownership case to defend a higher quote, plans roles with distributors, reviews the installed base for spares and service and sets long-cycle pipeline stages by customer actions. Each participant leaves with plans for three key opportunities.

75% hands-on practice · 13.5 contact hours · Cohort: 12–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: Understand the plant and the buyers

Participants can map a buying group, run discovery and influence the specification early.

1. 09:30–10:15 · Why the better machine lost (Energiser)
2. 10:15–11:15 · Who really decides (Diagnostic)
3. 11:30–13:00 · Discovery with a busy production manager (Role-play)
4. 13:45–15:15 · Features to process outcomes (Skill drill)
5. 15:30–16:45 · Specified on the new line (Case clinic)
6. 16:45–17:30 · Plan the next plant visit (Action planning)

### Day 2: Prove value and grow the account

Participants can defend price with lifetime value, work with channels and manage long-cycle deals.

1. 09:30–10:15 · Building the lifetime cost (Hands-on lab)
2. 10:15–11:15 · Defending the higher quote (Role-play)
3. 11:30–13:00 · Distributor or direct? (Group challenge)
4. 13:45–15:15 · Mining the installed base (Build sprint)
5. 15:30–16:45 · Stages by customer action (Concept burst)
6. 16:45–17:30 · Three deals in 60 days (Action planning)

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30), or 5 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus 60 days of deal coaching. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is industrial sales training?

The recommended design is two full days in person, followed by 60 days of deal coaching on three live opportunities. It also runs as five live virtual sessions of three hours each for teams spread across territories.

### What activities are included in industrial sales training?

Sales engineers map buying groups on live deals, run discovery with a busy production manager, plan early specification on a new line, build and defend a cost-of-ownership case, plan distributor roles and mine their installed base for spares and service.

## How we deliver it

### Live deals in the room

Participants bring two current opportunities, and every tool is applied to them, from buying-group maps to cost-of-ownership worksheets.

### Engineer-friendly practice

Role-plays use realistic plant personas and technical objections, so sales engineers rehearse with the people they actually meet.

### Numbers made simple

Short worksheets turn downtime, energy and scrap into rupee or dirham values that buyers recognise.

### Deal coaching after the program

Sales managers and Bodhih coaches review progress on chosen deals during the 60 days after the workshop.

## Tailored versions

### For capital equipment and machine tools

Focuses on long cycles, trials and demos, financing conversations and handover to service after commissioning.

### For components and consumables

Focuses on repeat business, plant-level relationships, consumption reviews and protecting share against lower-cost rivals.

### For channel-led industrial brands

Trains brand sales teams and distributor engineers together, with joint account plans and shared discovery standards.

## How we measure impact

Industrial sales training follows the Evaluate stage of the ADDIE model. Sales engineers complete an AssessAll pre-assessment and post-assessment on Discovery & Questioning Skill and Value Articulation — Building the Buyer's Business Case. Sales managers hold structured deal reviews, and a 30-60-90 day follow-up tracks agreed signals such as buying-group coverage, early specification wins, cost-of-ownership cases presented and aftermarket opportunities opened.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is industrial sales training?

Industrial sales training is a program for sales engineers and account teams who sell equipment, components, automation, chemicals or consumables to plants, OEMs and project firms. It builds skills in technical discovery, application selling, shaping specifications, mapping buying groups, cost-of-ownership cases, working with distributors and growing spares and service revenue.

### What skills does an industrial sales engineer need?

Beyond product knowledge, an industrial sales engineer needs strong discovery questioning, the ability to link features to the customer's process, commercial numeracy for lifetime-cost cases and the confidence to engage every member of the buying group. Pipeline habits for long cycles matter too. Our program builds each skill on the participant's own live deals.

### How do you sell capital equipment to a manufacturing plant?

Start with the problem on the shop floor, such as a bottleneck, quality loss or downtime. Meet production, maintenance and the plant head, not only procurement. Prove value with a trial or reference visit, then present a lifetime cost case. Keep the deal moving with agreed customer actions at each stage.

### How do you get specified early in an industrial project?

Build relationships with design teams, consultants and project firms before the tender is written. Offer application expertise, help with layouts or calculations and share test data. When the requirement is drafted, it then reflects the features your solution does well. The program includes a case on getting specified for a new line.

### Who is in the buying group for industrial equipment?

It usually includes the plant head, production manager, maintenance head, quality, projects or engineering, procurement and finance. In larger groups, a corporate technical centre may also have a voice. Each values different outcomes, so the case must be tailored. Participants map the buying group for a live deal during the program.

### How do you grow spares and service revenue?

Review the installed base regularly, know each machine's age and usage, and plan spares and service conversations before breakdowns happen. Offer upgrades and retrofits linked to output or energy savings. Work with service engineers, who often hear about needs first. The program includes an installed-base review for one territory.

### How long is the industrial sales training program?

Our recommended design is two days in person or five three-hour [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions, followed by 60 days of deal coaching. A one-day version suits distributor sales teams. The design is customised after a short needs analysis with your sales leadership.

### Do you offer industrial sales training in Pune, Chennai and the Gulf?

Yes. Bodhih's master trainers travel from Bengaluru to sales teams in Pune, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Delhi NCR and across India, and to the UAE and wider Gulf. Live virtual cohorts suit territory-based teams spread across many regions, with short sessions that fit around customer visits.
