## Why self-doubt is rising in capable people

Flatter structures are handing managers bigger teams and broader scope almost overnight, and many respond by quietly doubting whether they are up to it. Commentators now describe impostor feelings produced at scale by these sudden jumps in responsibility.

Add rapid AI change, visible peer success on social media and being the only woman or the youngest person in the room, and self-doubt finds plenty of fuel. An imposter syndrome workshop gives people language for the experience and practical tools to keep it from holding back their contribution.

> A systematic review of 62 studies found impostor syndrome prevalence ranging from 9% to 82%, depending on the screening tool used.

## Sample training plan: half-day hands-on design

This half-day workshop is for capable people who privately wait to be found out. In a confidential room, participants name their own imposter pattern, catch the automatic thoughts behind it and rewrite them against the evidence. They start an achievement log in the room, practise accepting praise without deflecting, and rehearse speaking up for their work in a review or meeting. It is a development session, not therapy, and it points to EAP and professional support for anyone whose self-doubt needs more help.

78% hands-on practice · 3.2 contact hours · Cohort: 10–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Half day: From self-doubt to self-belief

Participants can name their pattern, rewrite imposter thoughts with evidence, keep an achievement log and speak up for their work with calm confidence.

1. 09:30–10:00 · The secret ballot (Energiser)
2. 10:00–10:40 · Which pattern is mine? (Diagnostic)
3. 10:55–11:45 · Put the thought on trial (Skill drill)
4. 11:45–12:15 · Start the evidence log (Hands-on lab)
5. 12:15–12:45 · Thank you, and here is what I did (Role-play)
6. 12:45–13:00 · My 30-day confidence plan (Action planning)

Recommended: a half day in person (09:30–13:00), or 2 × 2-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 30-day confidence plan and a day-90 review. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is the imposter syndrome workshop?

The recommended design is a half day in person, from 09:30 to 13:00, with a 30-day confidence plan and a peer circle afterwards. It also runs as two live virtual sessions of two hours each, a week apart, so participants can use their evidence log in between.

### What activities are included in the imposter syndrome workshop?

Participants take an anonymous ballot that shows how common the feeling is, identify their dominant pattern, put an imposter thought on trial with evidence for and against, start an achievement log in the room and practise accepting praise and describing their contribution to a senior leader.

## How we deliver it

### Safe, confidential space

Ground rules protect confidentiality, and all sharing in the imposter syndrome workshop is optional, with private reflection offered as an alternative.

### Cognitive tools, not pep talks

Participants learn structured reframing and evidence techniques they can use alone, rather than relying on motivation from a single session.

### Peer normalisation

Hearing capable colleagues describe similar doubts is often the turning point, so small-group discussion is central.

### Designed with ADDIE

We tailor examples to your audience, such as [new managers](https://bodhih.com/first-time-manager-training/), women in tech or graduate cohorts, after a short needs analysis.

## Tailored versions

### For women in tech

Explores the extra pressures of being one of few, visibility and credit, and building sponsor relationships, often linked to women's leadership pathways.

### For newly promoted managers

Focuses on the jump in scope, leading former peers, making decisions without all the answers and asking for support early.

### For graduate and early-career cohorts

Helps new professionals handle comparison, fear of asking questions and the pressure to seem instantly competent.

## How we measure impact

We plan evaluation using the ADDIE Evaluate stage. Participants complete a short, anonymous self-rating before and after the workshop on confidence, self-advocacy and how often self-doubt holds them back, and can take a self-awareness or [emotional intelligence](https://bodhih.com/emotional-intelligence-at-workplace/) assessment on AssessAll. At 30, 60 and 90 days, brief check-ins ask about evidence log use, praise acceptance and specific self-advocacy actions, such as volunteering for visible work, with results reported in aggregate.

Pair this program with [AssessAll](https://assessall.com), Bodhih’s AI assessment platform, for pre- and post-program skill measurement.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is imposter syndrome at work?

Imposter syndrome describes persistent feelings of self-doubt in capable people who believe their success is due to luck, timing or others' mistakes rather than their own ability. At work it often shows up as over-preparing, avoiding stretch opportunities, deflecting praise and fearing being found out. It is common, not a clinical diagnosis, and usually responds well to practical tools.

### How do you overcome imposter syndrome?

Start by noticing and naming imposter thoughts, then test them against evidence. Keeping an achievement log, talking openly with trusted peers, accepting praise without deflecting and setting realistic standards all help. An imposter syndrome workshop teaches these techniques and gives people practice, so they can use them when self-doubt appears in real situations.

### Why do high achievers feel like frauds?

High achievers often hold very high standards, compare themselves with the most capable people around them and work in settings where they are always learning something new. Each new success raises the bar, so they rarely feel they have arrived. Being one of few from a particular group can intensify the feeling.

### Is this workshop a form of therapy?

No. It is a professional development session that teaches practical cognitive and behavioural tools. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. If self-doubt is accompanied by persistent anxiety, low mood or distress, participants are encouraged to speak with a qualified professional or use their Employee Assistance Program, and we signpost your organisation's support options.

### How common is imposter syndrome?

It is widely reported, though estimates vary a lot. A 2020 systematic review of 62 studies found prevalence ranging from 9% to 82%, largely because studies used different measures and cut-offs. What is clear is that many capable people experience it, and naming it openly helps them realise they are not alone.

### Can managers help employees with imposter syndrome?

Yes. Managers can give specific, evidence-based feedback, attribute success accurately, normalise learning curves and encourage people to take on visible work. They can also avoid over-relying on the same confident voices. We offer a short manager add-on to the imposter syndrome workshop that covers these habits.

### Is the workshop only for women?

No. Imposter feelings affect people of all genders, levels and backgrounds. Many organisations run it for women in tech or women's networks because being under-represented can intensify self-doubt, but it works equally well for new managers, graduate cohorts or mixed groups. We adjust examples to suit the audience.

### How is the workshop delivered?

It runs as a half-day in person session or two [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions. Bodhih's facilitators travel from Bengaluru to deliver in person across India, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Smaller groups work best, since discussion is central, and the session can be part of a broader leadership or wellbeing pathway.
