The sales head who now owns a region, the plant manager handed a full P&L, the GCC delivery leader asked to run a business line. Our general management program helps functional experts see the whole business, weigh trade-offs and lead the leaders who report to them.

## Why functional stars stall when they get the whole business

A brilliant finance controller or operations head is promoted to run a business unit, and the first quarterly review is a shock. Suddenly every decision trades one function against another: a pricing call hits the plant, a hiring freeze hits sales, a service promise hits cash. The instincts that won the promotion now pull in one direction when the job needs all of them.

Indian companies and global capability centres are creating these roles faster than executive-education calendars can absorb. An in-house general management program lets you grow P&L leaders on your own numbers, your own markets and your own dilemmas, so the learning shows up in the next business review rather than the next appraisal.

> Global leadership roles in India's capability centres are expected to grow from about 6,500 to over 30,000 by 2030.

## What participants will be able to do

### See the whole business

Map how value is created and lost across sales, operations, finance, people and technology in their own unit.

### Read the numbers like an owner

Interpret a P&L, balance sheet and cash-flow view well enough to spot the story behind a margin slide.

### Make cross-functional trade-offs

Weigh competing demands from different functions with explicit criteria and explain the call to both sides.

### Turn strategy into a plan

Convert a three-year direction into annual priorities, owners, budgets and a quarterly review rhythm.

### Lead leaders, not doers

Set direction for managers who are experts in functions the participant has never run.

### Defend a business case

Present and defend a costed business review in front of senior leaders and handle hard questions.

## Sample training plan: 3-day hands-on design

This three-day design moves functional heads from running one function to running a whole business. Participants map value across their own unit, read a P&L, balance sheet and cash view as one story and play a multi-round business game where pricing, capacity, hiring and cash collide. They practise cross-functional trade-off meetings, convert strategy into a funded annual plan and lead their first leadership team meeting as a general manager. Each leader leaves with a live business issue to present at a day-90 capstone review.

70% hands-on practice · 20.2 contact hours · Cohort: 12–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: See the whole business and read its numbers

Participants can map value across their unit and read its financial statements as one connected story.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Whose problem is this? (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Value-chain map of my unit (Diagnostic)
3. 11:15–12:15 · Three statements, one story (Concept burst)
4. 12:15–13:00 · Reading my own numbers (Case clinic)
5. 13:45–15:30 · Business game: rounds one and two (Business game)
6. 15:45–16:45 · Levers that move margin (Group challenge)
7. 16:45–17:30 · What I now see (Reflection)

### Day 2: Markets, trade-offs and strategy to plan

Participants can weigh cross-functional trade-offs openly and turn direction into a funded annual plan.

1. 09:30–10:15 · Business game: round three (Business game)
2. 10:15–11:15 · Customers worth serving (Case clinic)
3. 11:30–13:00 · The tension meeting (Simulation)
4. 13:45–14:30 · Who decides what (Build sprint)
5. 14:30–15:30 · Direction to priorities (Build sprint)
6. 15:45–16:45 · A review that drives action (Role-play)
7. 16:45–17:30 · Plan clinic (Feedback round)

### Day 3: Leading leaders and the capstone brief

Participants can set direction for a leadership team of experts and have a clear plan for their capstone business issue.

1. 09:30–10:15 · Leading people who know more than you (Fishbowl)
2. 10:15–11:15 · First leadership team meeting (Role-play)
3. 11:30–12:30 · Talent two levels down (Diagnostic)
4. 13:15–14:45 · Capstone issue: build the case (Build sprint)

Recommended: 3 days in person (09:30–17:30), as one block or three monthly modules, or 8 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a capstone business review at day 90. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is the general management program?

The recommended design is three days in person, run as one block or three monthly modules, followed by a capstone business review at about day 90. It also runs as eight live virtual sessions of three hours each, with the business game played online.

### What activities are included in the general management program?

Participants map their unit's value chain, read their own P&L, play a multi-round business game, run a cross-functional tension meeting, draft a decision map and annual priorities, role-play their first leadership team meeting and rehearse a capstone plan in front of a peer panel.

## How we deliver it

### Your numbers, not a textbook

Cases and the business game are built from the client's own cost structure, markets and unit data, anonymised where needed, during the ADDIE design phase.

### Business simulation

Teams run a multi-round business game where pricing, capacity, hiring and cash decisions interact, so the trade-offs are felt as well as understood.

### Senior leader involvement

Business heads open modules, share real dilemmas and sit on the capstone panel, which keeps the program anchored to strategy.

### Spaced modules with live work

Between modules participants apply each tool to a real issue in their unit, with peer groups that keep each other honest.

## Tailored versions

### For GCC and global delivery leaders

Cases focus on moving from cost-centre thinking to value creation, running a business line across time zones and partnering with global business owners.

### For manufacturing plant heads

Heavier on cost of quality, capacity utilisation, inventory and working capital, with a plant-level P&L built into the business game.

### For regional and country managers

Adds market entry choices, distributor economics and leading a small multi-function team far from head office, for the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa.

## How we measure impact

Impact is tracked through the Evaluate stage of ADDIE. Participants take a pre and post assessment on AssessAll covering business acumen, [strategic thinking](https://bodhih.com/strategic-thinking-training/) and leadership, and can add a 360° view from their leadership team. Sponsors hold 30-60-90 day check-ins on each participant's business issue, and the capstone panel scores plan quality, financial logic and trade-off clarity. Individual development plans then carry the learning into the first year in role.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a general management program?

A general management program develops leaders who will own a whole business unit rather than one function. It covers financial fluency, customers and markets, cross-functional trade-offs, strategy-to-plan and leading other leaders. Bodhih runs it in-house, so every case, number and dilemma comes from your own business and participants apply the tools to a live issue.

### What skills does a general manager need?

A general manager needs to read financial statements as one story, understand customers and competition, weigh trade-offs between functions and turn strategy into a funded plan. Equally important is leading leaders: setting direction for experts in areas they have never run and building a leadership team that disagrees productively and then commits.

### How is a general management program different from an MBA?

An MBA is a broad academic qualification taken over one or two years. An in-house general management program is shorter, customised to one organisation and focused on the specific transition into P&L ownership. Participants work on their own unit's numbers and a live business issue, and the program ends with a capstone review in front of senior leaders.

### How do functional heads move into general management?

Start by learning how every function makes and loses money, especially the ones you have never run. Build financial fluency, practise making trade-offs openly and shift your time from doing expert work to setting direction for other leaders. A structured program with a real business issue speeds this up considerably.

### Who should attend a general management program?

It suits functional heads promoted, or about to be promoted, into business-unit, plant, country or P&L roles. GCC centre leaders taking on a business line and senior managers in succession plans also benefit. Cohorts work well when they mix functions, so a finance head and a sales head learn from each other's blind spots.

### How long is the general management program?

Our recommended design is three days in person, either as one block or three monthly modules, or eight three-hour [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions. A capstone business review follows at about day 90. The final shape is agreed after a needs analysis with your HR and business leaders, and can extend into a longer cohort journey.

### Can the program use our company's real financials?

Yes, and we recommend it. During design we build the business game and cases from your cost structure and market data, anonymised or rounded where sensitive. Participants who read their own numbers in the room use them sooner in real reviews.

### Do you run the general management program outside India?

Yes. Bodhih has designed and delivered programs since 2008 for more than 2,000 companies, across India, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Far East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and Africa. Master trainers travel from Bengaluru for in-person modules, or the program runs live virtually across time zones.
