## Why communication changes as you move up

As people move into senior roles, the audience changes. Executives and boards have minutes, not hours, and they expect the answer first, the reasoning second and the ask made clear.

Executive communication training helps leaders make that shift. It builds the structure, brevity and composure needed for board updates, leadership reviews, town halls and difficult announcements.

## Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day workshop helps senior managers communicate the way executives and boards listen: answer first, in business terms, and ready for tough questions. Each participant brings a real leadership update or board paper due in the next quarter. They map the executives who will hear it, restructure it into a one-page brief, rebuild the summary slide, rehearse answers to hostile questions and record a two-minute change announcement. The capstone is a mock leadership review where the panel cuts time and jumps ahead, followed by two coaching sessions.

78% hands-on practice · 13.5 contact hours · Cohort: 8–14 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: Think and write like the room you are briefing

Participants can turn a real update into an answer-first brief and summary slide that supports a decision.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Thirty floors with the CEO (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Stakeholder map for my update (Diagnostic)
3. 11:15–11:45 · Answer first (Concept burst)
4. 11:45–13:00 · One-page brief for my update (Build sprint)
5. 13:45–14:45 · The summary slide and the appendix (Hands-on lab)
6. 14:45–15:30 · When the chair cuts your time (Skill drill)
7. 15:45–16:45 · Briefing headquarters (Case clinic)
8. 16:45–17:30 · Day one mirror (Reflection)

### Day 2: Hold the room under pressure

Participants can handle hostile questions, announce change with candour and deliver their real update in a mock leadership review.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Overnight rewrite (Feedback round)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Question grenades (Skill drill)
3. 11:15–12:15 · Reading the room (Role-play)
4. 12:15–13:00 · Town hall: the change announcement (Presentation)
5. 13:45–15:15 · Capstone: the leadership review (Simulation)
6. 15:30–16:30 · Video review: presence and voice (Peer coaching)
7. 16:30–17:30 · My executive voice plan (Action planning)

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30) plus two 1:1 coaching sessions over the following two months, or 5 × 3-hour live virtual sessions. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is executive communication training?

The recommended design is two days in person, from 09:30 to 17:30, followed by two 1:1 coaching sessions on real leadership communications over the next two months. It also runs as five live virtual sessions of three hours. A one-day intensive suits small leadership teams.

### What activities are included in executive communication training?

Participants rebuild a real leadership update as a one-page answer-first brief, cut their deck to one summary slide, face rapid-fire tough questions and record a two-minute change announcement. The capstone is a mock leadership review where the panel cuts time, challenges numbers and asks for a decision, followed by video review.

## How we deliver it

### Real material only

Participants work on live board papers, leadership updates and town hall messages rather than case studies.

### Senior-level simulations

Experienced facilitators play demanding executives and board members in recorded mock reviews.

### Small, confidential cohorts

Cohorts are kept small so senior leaders can practise openly and receive candid feedback.

### Coaching bridge

One-to-one coaching after the workshop applies the tools to each leader's upcoming high-stakes moments.

## Tailored versions

### For new directors and VPs

Supports the transition from functional expert to enterprise leader, with extra coaching on visibility and influence.

### For GCC leaders

Prepares India-based leaders to brief global headquarters, pitch for new mandates and represent their centre with confidence.

### For functional experts

Helps finance, HR, risk and technology leaders translate specialist detail into board-ready decisions.

## How we measure impact

Using the ADDIE Evaluate stage, leaders complete a 360° communication feedback survey on AssessAll before the program and again at 90 days, gathering views from their manager, peers and team. Recorded mock presentations are scored against the same rubric at the start and end. Coaches review real briefs and presentations during 30-60-90 day follow-ups, and sponsors receive a short summary of observed progress.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is executive communication?

Executive communication is the way senior leaders, and those who brief them, share information to drive decisions. It is concise, answer-first and focused on impact, risk and action rather than activity. It covers presentations, emails, board papers, town halls and [high-stakes conversations](https://bodhih.com/high-stakes-conversations-training/).

### How do you communicate effectively with executives?

Lead with your conclusion or recommendation, then give two or three supporting reasons and a clear ask. Keep it brief, anticipate the risk and cost questions, and have detail ready in an appendix. Executives value clarity and candour over polish.

### How do you present to senior leadership?

Open with the decision you need and why it matters now, then support it with a small number of well-chosen facts. Expect interruptions and be ready to jump to what they care about. Rehearse tough questions beforehand so you can answer calmly and directly.

### How do you structure a message for busy executives?

Put the main message or recommendation first, then two to four grouped supporting points, then the evidence. Busy readers get the point in seconds and can stop reading once they have what they need. The program practises this on participants' real updates, emails and proposals, so the structure becomes a habit rather than a theory.

### How do you write an executive summary?

State the purpose and recommendation in the first two lines, then summarise the key reasons, risks and required decision. Keep it to a single page that stands alone without the main document. Use plain language and specific numbers rather than general statements.

### Does the program include one-to-one coaching?

Our recommended design for executive communication training includes two one-to-one coaching sessions after the group workshop, focused on each leader's real upcoming presentations or communications. Coaching can be extended for leaders in major transitions, and the whole design is customised to your leadership context.

### Who should attend executive communication training?

It suits senior managers, directors and new VPs who brief leadership teams or boards, and functional experts whose work must be translated into business decisions. It is also valuable for GCC leaders who represent their centre to global headquarters and need to compete for attention and mandates.
