Sales promised a date, product never heard about it and support takes the angry call. This cross-functional collaboration training gives individual contributors the skills to agree shared outcomes, hand work over cleanly and settle priority clashes with other teams before customers feel them.

Cross-functional collaboration training is a practical program that helps employees get work done with colleagues in other functions, such as sales, product, operations, finance and support. It covers understanding other teams' goals, agreeing shared outcomes, clean handoffs, requests without authority, priority clashes, working across locations and joint problem solving. It builds individual skills, not reporting lines.

## Why work now breaks at the borders between teams

Most delays no longer come from one team working slowly. They come from the gap between teams: the finance approval nobody chased, the spec that changed after operations had planned, the Hyderabad and Dublin teams that never overlap long enough to talk.

Restructures and new AI tools keep moving those borders. Cross-functional collaboration training gives people the habits to map who needs what from whom, ask clearly and close the gaps themselves, rather than escalating every clash to a manager.

## What participants will be able to do

### Read other functions

Describe what sales, product, operations, finance and support are measured on, and what keeps each one up at month end.

### Agree shared outcomes

Turn competing team goals into one shared outcome with clear owners, dates and a definition of done.

### Hand over without drops

Run handoffs with a written checklist so the receiving team has context, decisions and open risks.

### Ask across teams

Make requests to people you do not manage that are specific, timed and easy to say yes to.

### Settle priority clashes

Resolve a clash between two teams' priorities using shared criteria before escalating, and escalate jointly when needed.

### Solve problems together

Run a short joint problem-solving session that brings each function's view to the table and ends in agreed actions.

## Who should attend

- Individual contributors in sales, product, operations, finance and support who depend on other teams
- Project and launch team members pulled together from several functions
- GCC and shared-services staff working with business partners overseas
- Engineers and analysts who hand work to business or client teams
- New joiners who need to learn how work flows across the organisation
- Retail, BPM and manufacturing teams where shifts, sites and head office must line up

## Sample training plan: 1.5-day hands-on design

This one-and-a-half-day design puts people from different functions at the same table and lets real friction surface. Participants map a workflow that crosses their teams, argue from another function's chair and write a shared outcome both sides accept. They practise handoffs with a checklist, make requests without authority and settle a priority clash before escalating. The capstone is a product launch where sales, product, finance and support collide. Everyone leaves with a 60-day handoff experiment.

80% hands-on practice · 10 contact hours · Cohort: 12–24 participants, ideally from several functions · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: Shared outcomes and clean handoffs

Participants can see work through other functions' eyes, agree a shared outcome and run a handoff that holds.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Pass the parcel (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · Map the real workflow (Diagnostic)
3. 11:15–12:30 · The other chair (Debate)
4. 13:15–14:30 · One outcome, signed by both (Build sprint)
5. 14:45–16:00 · Handoff relay (Skill drill)
6. 16:00–17:30 · Requests without authority (Role-play)

### Day 2 (half day): Clashes, distance and the launch

Participants can settle priority clashes, collaborate across sites and plan a handoff experiment.

1. 09:30–10:15 · When priorities collide (Case clinic)
2. 10:30–11:00 · Across the time zones (Concept burst)
3. 11:00–12:15 · Capstone: launch week (Simulation)
4. 12:15–13:00 · My 60-day handoff experiment (Action planning)

Recommended: 1.5 days in person (day 1 09:30–17:30, day 2 09:30–13:00), or 3 × 3.5-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 60-day handoff experiment. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is cross-functional collaboration training?

The recommended design is one and a half days in person, a full day and a morning, or three live virtual sessions of three and a half hours, followed by a 60-day handoff experiment with a partner from another team.

### What activities are included in cross-functional collaboration training?

Participants map a real workflow, argue from another function's chair, write a shared outcome, run a handoff relay with and without a checklist, practise requests without authority, settle a priority clash and play a launch-week simulation across six functions.

## How we deliver it

### Mixed-function tables

Where possible, each table seats people from different functions, so the clashes in the room mirror the ones at work.

### Live workflow mapping

Participants map a real process that crosses their teams and find the exact points where work stalls.

### Role reversal

People argue a case from another function's chair, which surfaces assumptions faster than any lecture.

### Handoff experiment

Each participant runs a 60-day experiment on one handoff they own, with a partner from the receiving team.

## Tailored versions

### For GCC and global delivery teams

Cases cover onsite-offshore handoffs, headquarters business partners and time-zone overlap, with practice in written updates that travel well.

### For a launch or project team

Run with one intact cross-functional team, the program builds their shared outcome, handoff checklist and clash rules for a real launch.

### For front-line networks

A shorter version for retail, BPM and plant teams focused on shift handovers and requests between sites and head office.

## How we measure impact

We use the Evaluate stage of ADDIE to plan measurement before delivery. Participants take an AssessAll pre-assessment on collaboration behaviours and repeat it as a post-assessment at day 90. Managers check in at 30, 60 and 90 days, and partners from the receiving team rate each handoff experiment on clarity and rework. Results from the cross-functional collaboration training are reviewed with HR alongside agreed indicators, such as escalations or turnaround time.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is cross-functional collaboration training?

Cross-functional collaboration training is a program that builds the skills individuals need to deliver work with people in other functions. It covers understanding another team's goals, agreeing shared outcomes, clean handoffs, making requests without authority, settling priority clashes and solving problems jointly across sites and time zones. Bodhih customises cases to the real workflows that cross your teams.

### How do you improve cross-functional collaboration?

Start with one shared outcome both teams care about, written down with owners and dates. Map the handoffs between teams and agree what each one must contain. Make requests specific and timed, and settle clashes with shared criteria before escalating. Small, repeated habits at handoff points improve collaboration more than one-off team events.

### Why do handoffs between teams fail?

Handoffs usually fail because context stays with the sender. The receiving team gets the task but not the decisions already made, the open risks or the person to call. A short checklist covering context, decisions, risks and contact, plus a confirmation that the work was received, prevents most drops.

### How do you ask another team for help when you have no authority?

Make the request easy to accept. Say what you need, by when and why it matters to a goal they share. Offer what you can do in return, such as giving early notice next time. Follow up once, politely and with a specific question. Participants practise this with colleagues playing busy partners from other functions.

### How do you resolve conflicting priorities between departments?

Bring both requests into one conversation and compare them against shared criteria, such as customer impact, revenue at risk and deadline. Often a split or a sequence solves it. If not, escalate together with two options rather than separately with complaints. This keeps relationships intact and gets a faster decision.

### How is this different from matrix management training?

Matrix management training is for managers who lead people with two reporting lines. This cross-functional collaboration training is for individual contributors and project team members who need to get work done across functions without formal authority. The two pair well: managers set the structure, and their teams learn the day-to-day collaboration habits.

### Can cross-functional collaboration training run online?

Yes. The [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) design runs as three sessions of three and a half hours, with mixed-function breakout rooms and shared workflow maps. It suits teams spread across Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Riyadh and overseas offices. In-person delivery is available across Bodhih's seven regions, with master trainers travelling from Bengaluru.
