A quiz that everyone passes proves nothing, and a survey full of 'excellent' tells you less. This assessment design training for trainers teaches trainers, subject experts and L&D teams to write objectives, questions, rubrics and surveys that show whether learning actually happened.

## Why trainers must now prove that learning works

Learning teams in BPM hubs, banks and [GCCs](https://bodhih.com/gcc-leadership-development-program/) are being asked a sharper question: what changed after the training? End-of-day quizzes that test recall and smile sheets that rate the lunch cannot answer it.

Good assessment is a design skill, not an afterthought. Assessment design training for trainers gives facilitators and subject experts practical methods to write items that test real performance, mark consistently and collect feedback leaders can act on.

> Average formal learning hours per employee fell to 13.7 in 2024, from 17.4 in 2023.

## What participants will be able to do

### Write measurable objectives

Rewrite vague goals such as 'understand' into objectives that name an observable action, a condition and a standard.

### Pick the right item type

Match each objective to the item that can test it: multiple choice, scenario, short answer, practical task or observation.

### Write sharper questions

Write multiple-choice and scenario questions with clear stems, plausible distractors and no giveaway clues.

### Mark consistently

Build rubrics with clear levels and run a calibration exercise so two markers give the same score.

### Design useful surveys

Write feedback surveys with neutral questions and balanced scales that produce data people can act on.

### Use AI with care

Draft items with an AI assistant, then check them for accuracy, bias, ambiguity and answer leaks.

## Who should attend

- Corporate trainers and facilitators who write their own quizzes and tests
- Subject matter experts asked to build assessments for technical or product training
- Instructional designers and L&D teams responsible for evaluation
- Assessors and coaches who mark practical tasks, role-plays or projects
- [Train-the-trainer](https://bodhih.com/train-the-trainer/) graduates adding assessment to their delivery skills

## Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design

This one-day certification module turns trainers into assessment designers. Participants rewrite fuzzy objectives, build a test blueprint and run clinics on multiple-choice and scenario questions. They mark the same role-play recording with a rubric, compare scores and fix the rubric until markers agree. The afternoon covers feedback surveys that give usable data and drafting items with an AI assistant under careful review. Everyone leaves with an improved assessment and a 30-day certification task.

75% hands-on practice · 6.8 contact hours · Cohort: 10–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: Measure what your training teaches

Participants can write measurable objectives, sound questions, calibrated rubrics and useful surveys, and plan a complete assessment.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Pass the unpassable quiz (Energiser)
2. 10:00–10:45 · Objectives you can measure (Skill drill)
3. 11:00–11:30 · Pick the item, plan the test (Concept burst)
4. 11:30–12:45 · Question clinic (Build sprint)
5. 13:30–14:45 · Calibration round (Case clinic)
6. 15:00–15:45 · Surveys worth reading (Group challenge)
7. 15:45–16:30 · Drafting with AI, checking like an editor (Hands-on lab)
8. 16:30–17:30 · My certification task (Action planning)

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 2 × 3.5-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 30-day certification task. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is assessment design training for trainers?

The recommended design is one day in person or two live virtual sessions of three and a half hours, followed by a 30-day certification task in which each participant builds a complete assessment for a real program.

### What activities are included in assessment design training for trainers?

Participants take a quiz they can pass by spotting clues, rewrite objectives, build a test blueprint, run a question clinic, calibrate a rubric on a recorded role-play, fix a feedback survey and draft and check items with an AI assistant.

## How we deliver it

### Bring your own test

Participants bring a quiz, rubric or survey they use now and improve it throughout the day.

### Item clinics

Small groups critique each other's questions against a short checklist and rewrite them on the spot.

### Calibration rounds

Participants mark the same role-play recording with a rubric, compare scores and refine the rubric until they agree.

### Certification task

Within 30 days, each participant submits a complete assessment for a real program, reviewed by a Bodhih [master trainer](https://bodhih.com/master-trainer-certification/).

## Tailored versions

### For technical and product trainers

Focuses on practical tasks, lab checklists and scenario questions for software, product and process training.

### For L&D and evaluation teams

Adds test blueprints across a curriculum, item banks, survey design for program reviews and reporting results to business leaders.

### Inside train-the-trainer

A half-day version can be added to a train-the-trainer program so new facilitators design assessment alongside delivery.

## How we measure impact

We measure through the Evaluate stage of ADDIE. Participants take two AssessAll pre-assessments, Marking Consistency and Assessment Design Assessment for Teachers, Trainers and Assessors, and Survey and Questionnaire Design Assessment for Research, HR and Customer Insight Teams, and repeat them at day 90. The 30-day certification task is scored with a rubric, and L&D leads check in at 30, 60 and 90 days on assessments now in use.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is assessment design training for trainers?

Assessment design training for trainers is a program that teaches trainers, subject experts and L&D teams to build assessments that measure learning fairly. It covers writing measurable objectives, choosing item types, writing multiple-choice and scenario questions, building rubrics, marking consistently, designing feedback surveys and drafting items with AI under human review.

### How do you design an assessment for a training program?

Start from the objectives, not the content. For each objective, decide what a learner must do to show they can meet it, then choose the item type that captures that action. Plan how many items each objective needs in a simple blueprint, write and review the items, and pilot them before full use.

### How do you write a good multiple-choice question?

Write a clear stem that poses one problem, with one answer that is defensibly correct. Make distractors plausible by basing them on real mistakes learners make. Avoid clues such as longer correct answers, negatives and 'all of the above'. Scenario-based stems test judgement better than recall of definitions.

### What makes a rubric fair?

A fair rubric describes each performance level in observable terms, so two markers watching the same work would give the same score. It focuses on criteria linked to the objective, not on effort or style. Calibration rounds, where markers score the same sample and discuss differences, are the quickest way to make a rubric consistent.

### How do you design a training feedback survey?

Keep it short and neutral. Ask about relevance, intent to apply and barriers at work, not only enjoyment. Use balanced rating scales with clear labels and add one or two open questions worth reading. Then plan a follow-up survey weeks later that asks what learners actually applied.

### Can AI write assessment questions?

AI can draft questions quickly, especially variations of scenario and multiple-choice items. Every draft still needs human review for accuracy, clarity, bias and answer leaks, and the item must match a real objective. Keep confidential content out of public AI tools. The program includes a practical session on drafting and checking AI-generated items.

### Is this a certification program?

Yes. It runs as a one-day certification module in Bodhih's trainer certification track. Participants who complete the 30-day task, a full assessment for a real program reviewed by a master trainer, receive a Bodhih certificate in assessment design. It complements train-the-trainer delivery skills and [instructional design](https://bodhih.com/instructional-designing-for-trainers/).

### How is assessment design different from a training evaluation workshop?

A [training evaluation](https://bodhih.com/training-evaluation-workshop/) workshop looks at the whole picture of whether a program worked, from reaction to business results. Assessment design training for trainers goes deeper into one part: building the actual instruments, such as questions, rubrics, checklists and surveys. Many L&D teams take both, using this module to make the data behind their evaluation trustworthy.
