## Why assertiveness is a business skill, not a personality trait

In many Indian workplaces, respect for hierarchy and harmony are real strengths. They can also mean people stay silent about risks, accept impossible deadlines or over-commit to avoid conflict.

Assertive communication training offers a respectful middle path. People learn to state needs, disagree and set boundaries in ways that protect relationships, which matters even more in flat, global and hybrid teams.

## What participants will be able to do

### Know your default style

Recognise when you slip into passive, aggressive or passive-aggressive patterns under pressure.

### Use assertive language

Frame requests and concerns with I-statements and the DESC script instead of hints or blame.

### Say no with care

Decline or renegotiate work using a Yes-No-Yes structure that keeps goodwill intact.

### Speak up with seniors

Disagree with a manager or senior leader respectfully and back your view with facts.

### Stay calm under criticism

Respond to unfair or aggressive comments without shutting down or striking back.

### Protect your boundaries

Set reasonable limits on workload and after-hours availability and communicate them clearly.

## Who should attend

- Employees who tend to agree to everything and then struggle to deliver
- Individual contributors who rarely speak up in meetings with seniors
- Customer-facing staff who handle demanding clients or customers
- Women professionals who want to build a confident, authentic voice
- [New managers](https://bodhih.com/first-time-manager-training/) learning to hold team members to account

## Sample training plan: 1-day hands-on design

This one-day workshop helps people speak up, say no and handle pushback without going quiet or getting sharp. Participants bring three real situations: a request to decline, a point to raise with a senior and a criticism that stung. They find their default style under pressure, rewrite passive and aggressive messages, practise declining their own manager's request with an alternative, win airtime in a mock meeting and replay tense moments in a replay theatre until the assertive version feels natural.

82% hands-on practice · 6.8 contact hours · Cohort: 12–20 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: Clear, calm and respectful

Participants can say no, speak up and respond to criticism assertively in their own real situations.

1. 09:30–10:00 · Four corners (Energiser)
2. 10:00–11:00 · My style under pressure (Diagnostic)
3. 11:15–11:45 · Rights, beliefs and guilt (Concept burst)
4. 11:45–13:00 · The message rewrite lab (Skill drill)
5. 13:45–14:45 · No, with an alternative (Real-play)
6. 14:45–15:30 · Getting airtime (Simulation)
7. 15:45–16:45 · Replay theatre (Role-play)
8. 16:45–17:30 · My 30-day assertiveness log (Action planning)

Recommended: 1 day in person (09:30–17:30), or 3 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 30-day practice log. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is assertive communication training?

The recommended design is one day in person, from 09:30 to 17:30, followed by a 30-day practice log. It also runs as three live virtual sessions of about three hours, spaced so participants can try each skill at work in between.

### What activities are included in assertive communication training?

Participants walk to style corners, rewrite passive and aggressive messages, rehearse declining a real request from their manager with an alternative, fight for airtime in a meeting simulation with dominating colleagues and replay tense moments from their own work in a replay theatre.

## How we deliver it

### Safe practice space

Participants rehearse difficult lines in pairs and small groups before trying them at work, so confidence grows gradually.

### Theatre-based role-play

Trainers use forum-theatre techniques to replay a scene, pause it and let participants try different responses.

### Culturally grounded

Examples reflect Indian and global workplace realities, so assertiveness never feels like copying a Western script.

### Personal commitments

Each participant leaves with two real conversations to hold within a week and a way to review them.

## Tailored versions

### For women professionals

Addresses double binds around likeability and confidence, with practice on negotiating workload, visibility and pay conversations.

### For customer-facing and support teams

Focuses on firm, polite boundaries with demanding customers while protecting service quality.

### For engineers in global teams

Builds the confidence to challenge requirements, estimates and technical decisions with direct US and European colleagues.

## How we measure impact

Using the Evaluate stage of ADDIE, participants complete a communication-style self-assessment before the program and again at 60 days, and can take a 360° assertiveness check on AssessAll where the client chooses. Managers note observable changes, such as participants raising risks earlier or renegotiating deadlines. At 30, 60 and 90 days we run short check-ins where participants review the real conversations they committed to holding.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is assertive communication at work?

Assertive communication means expressing your views, needs and limits clearly and honestly while respecting the other person. At work it looks like raising a concern early, saying no with a reason and an alternative, or disagreeing in a meeting without attacking anyone. It sits between passive silence and aggressive pushing.

### How can I be more assertive without being rude?

Focus on the issue, not the person, and use I-statements such as 'I am concerned the deadline is at risk'. Keep your tone calm, acknowledge the other view and offer a way forward. Practising these phrases in a safe setting first makes them feel natural rather than confrontational.

### What is the difference between assertive and aggressive communication?

Assertive communication respects both your needs and the other person's, while aggressive communication pushes your needs at their expense. Aggression often uses blame, sarcasm or a raised voice. Assertiveness uses facts, clear requests and a steady tone, which makes people more likely to cooperate.

### How do you say no to your manager politely?

Show you understand the priority, explain what you are already committed to, and ask which task should move or offer an alternative. For example: 'I can take this on if we push the report to Thursday. Which matters more this week?' This keeps the conversation about priorities, not refusal.

### What are examples of assertive statements?

Examples include 'I'd like to finish my point before we move on', 'I can't commit to Friday, but I can deliver a first version on Wednesday', and 'When the scope changes without notice, we miss quality checks, so I'd like changes flagged in writing'. Each is clear, specific and respectful.

### Can assertiveness be taught to introverts?

Yes. Assertiveness is a set of skills, not a personality type, and introverts are often very good at it because they prepare and listen well. Our assertive communication training helps quieter participants plan key sentences, choose the right moment and use written channels such as email and chat assertively too.

### How long is assertive communication training?

Our recommended design is 1 day in person or three [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions of about 3 hours, customised to your teams and culture. Spreading the sessions over two or three weeks works well, because participants can try new phrases in real conversations and bring back what happened for coaching.
