## Why multi-site leadership is its own skill

Most area managers were excellent store, restaurant or branch managers. They knew every customer and every shelf. In the new role they cannot be everywhere, and the habits that made them great on one site, fixing things personally and staying late, now leave the other eleven sites waiting.

Organised retail, QSR, quick commerce and branch banking keep expanding across tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and each new cluster needs someone who can lead managers from a distance. Area manager training gives them a routine for visits, reviews and coaching that works across a territory, not just inside one site.

## What participants will be able to do

### Run visits that change things

Plan and run site visits with a clear purpose, a short observation routine and agreed actions the site manager owns.

### Compare sites fairly

Use a simple multi-site scorecard to spot patterns, outliers and the sites that need attention first.

### Coach from a distance

Hold structured calls with site managers that build their judgement instead of handing out instructions.

### Spend time where it matters

Plan the week across the territory using performance, risk and development needs, not habit or geography.

### Standardise without smothering

Separate the non-negotiables from what each site manager can adapt to local customers and staff.

### Manage performance across sites

Hold site managers to account consistently and address a struggling site before it drags the cluster down.

## Who should attend

- District and operations managers in QSR, cafe and casual dining networks
- Cluster and regional heads of bank, NBFC and insurance branch networks

## Sample training plan: 2-day hands-on design

This two-day design gives area managers a working routine for running sites through other managers. Day 1 tackles the rescuer habit, then practises purposeful visits on a staged store floor with planted issues and builds a multi-site scorecard from participants' own data. Day 2 focuses on remote coaching calls, rolling out a standard without killing local ideas, handling a struggling site and planning a four-week territory calendar. Participants leave with a visit checklist, scorecard and visit plan.

80% hands-on practice · 13.5 contact hours · Cohort: 12–24 participants · In person · Live virtual

### Day 1: Visits and scorecards

Participants can run a purposeful site visit and use a multi-site scorecard to decide where to act.

1. 09:30–10:15 · The rescuer test (Energiser)
2. 10:15–11:15 · Where my weeks go (Diagnostic)
3. 11:30–13:00 · The mock floor visit (Simulation)
4. 13:45–15:15 · Build the multi-site scorecard (Hands-on lab)
5. 15:30–16:45 · The weekly cluster call (Role-play)
6. 16:45–17:30 · Visit plan for one site (Action planning)

### Day 2: Coaching, standards and the territory

Participants can coach site managers remotely, roll out standards wisely, address a struggling site and plan their territory.

1. 09:30–10:45 · The 15-minute coaching call (Skill drill)
2. 11:00–12:00 · Standards and local ideas (Debate)
3. 12:00–13:00 · The struggling site (Case clinic)
4. 13:45–15:00 · Same rules for every manager (Role-play)
5. 15:15–16:30 · The four-week territory plan (Build sprint)
6. 16:30–17:30 · My 90-day field plan (Action planning)

Recommended: 2 days in person (09:30–17:30 each day), or 4 × 3-hour live virtual sessions, plus a 90-day field application period. A sample design: every Bodhih program is customised after a short needs analysis.

### How long is area manager training?

The recommended design is two full days in person or four live virtual sessions of three hours, followed by a 90-day field application period with peer calls and reporting manager check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days.

### What activities are included in area manager training?

Participants run a mock visit on a staged store floor with planted issues, build a multi-site scorecard from their own data, lead a weekly cluster call, practise 15-minute coaching calls, handle a struggling site case and build a four-week territory plan.

## How we deliver it

### Mock floor visits

Participants practise visits on a staged store or branch set-up with planted issues, then debrief what they noticed and missed.

### Real territory data

Each participant brings anonymised data from their own sites and builds a scorecard and visit plan from it.

### Industry-specific cases

Retail, QSR and branch banking cohorts use cases from their own world, with the right measures and language.

### Field follow-through

Between day 2 and day 90, participants run real visits with a checklist and share results in peer calls.

## Tailored versions

### For retail and QSR networks

Cases cover footfall and conversion, shrink, kitchen standards, staff scheduling and peak-hour service across stores and outlets.

### For bank and NBFC branch clusters

Cases cover branch targets, cross-sell, [customer service](https://bodhih.com/customer-service-excellence-training/) queues, branch review findings and coaching branch managers across a region.

### For quick commerce and service networks

A version for dark store, service centre and field service clusters, with fulfilment time, productivity and shift coverage at the centre.

## How we measure impact

We evaluate through the ADDIE model. Participants complete three AssessAll assessments before the program and again at day 90: Area and Multi-Site Manager Judgment Assessment for Retail, Food Service and Branch Networks, [Performance Management](https://bodhih.com/performance-management-training/) & Accountability, and Time, Priorities & Focus. Reporting managers check in at 30, 60 and 90 days, and we review visit records, scorecard trends and site manager feedback with your operations and HR teams.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is area manager training?

Area manager training is a program for managers who lead several sites, such as stores, restaurants or branches, through site managers. It teaches how to run purposeful visits, compare sites with a scorecard, coach site managers remotely, plan time across a territory, balance standards with local initiative and manage performance consistently across sites.

### What does an area manager do?

An area manager is responsible for the results of a group of sites, typically 5 to 20 stores, outlets or branches. They set expectations for site managers, visit and review sites, coach managers, spread good practice, roll out standards and step in when a site struggles. The role is about guiding managers, not running a site.

### What makes a good store or branch visit?

A good visit has a clear purpose agreed before arrival, a short observation routine covering the floor, the back office and the customer experience, and a close with two or three actions the site manager owns. It ends with a follow-up date. The program uses mock floor visits to practise this routine.

### How do area managers coach store managers they rarely see?

Use a short, regular call with the same structure each week: a look at the numbers, one issue the manager chooses, questions that help them find the answer, and an agreed action. Visit time then builds on the calls rather than replacing them. Participants practise these calls with role-play partners during the program.

### How many sites should an area manager handle?

It depends on site size, travel time and how experienced the site managers are. Many retail and branch networks use clusters of 6 to 15 sites, while large-format stores may need smaller clusters. The program helps participants plan time across whatever territory they have, rather than setting a single number.

### How long is area manager training?

The recommended design is two days in person or four [live virtual](https://bodhih.com/live-virtual-classes/) sessions of three hours, followed by a 90-day field application period. Bodhih customises the cases, scorecard measures and visit routines to your network after a short needs analysis, and can run a shorter version for store managers preparing for their first area role.

### Can area manager training run for networks in India and the Gulf?

Yes. Bodhih has facilitated more than 18,000 programs since 2008 across India, the Middle East and other regions. Master trainers travel from Bengaluru to deliver in person, and live virtual cohorts suit area managers spread across cities. Cases are adapted to local formats, languages and customer expectations.
